Im going to Blackpool on Saturday March 17th to watch Brighton play Blackpool. I need to arrive before 2PM and leave after 5.30PM the same day.

I have a 16-25 railcard and the cheapest journey i have found on the southern website are -

Eastbourne to London Zones 1-6 - £11.70
Euston to Blackpool North - Leaving on the 10.30, changing at Preston, arriving at 13.21 - £24.75
Blackpool North to Euston - Leaving on the 18.29, changing at Preston, arriving at 21.38 - £19.45

Total - £55.90

Is there anyway i would be able to get this cheaper on alternative routes (im not familiar with the North West so i dont know if i could split the journey again).

Thanks

Tom

Is a through Advance ticket not cheaper?

You could look at splitting at Manchester, but I doubt it will be cheaper (possible though if there is a lot of demand for the Preston trains but not the Manchester trains), also again if there is not much demand for trains to Liverpool, then splitting there may be viable (but taking Northern from Liverpool to Blackpool will take ages).

It's also possible to get an Advance ticket to Manchester via Sheffield, and then another ticket from Manchester to Preston. It's unlikely to be cheaper, but if EMT are lightly loaded on that day and there is huge demand for Virgin services then it is possible.

You might want to consider getting up earlier, as earlier trains are showing a bit cheaper £19.45 (or you could even go up First Class on them at £25.10) giving you benefit of (a) slack in your timetable just in case trains don't run smoothly; (b) checking out Blackpool's non-football pitch attractions ?

The closest station to Bloomfield Road is Blackpool South. (Hourly service from Preston, usually dep 2 minutes after the hour, and returns 44 minutes after the hour. Platform 1 Preston)

Should of said that the Euston to Blackpool singles are advances. Ill have a look for the other options though.

I did look at that, but i was worried that after the match, all the home fans would go to the South station and i might not get on the train.

Ive had a look at the suggested routes - Via Manchester is the same price and i wouldnt be able to do Via Liverpool as there wouldnt be a train to Eastbourne from London until the following morning.

On the outward journey, they are all £24.75 but on the return, i am leaving it an hour later than i would as i would be saving £25 going on the 18.29 rather than the 17.37.

With first class, whats the Virgin first class service like at the weekends ?

If you're returning the same day its hardly ever cheaper to get a through advance from South of London and since many of the Sussex Coast services are reservable its also very hard to find the through journey you require.
Eastbourne-St Pancras-Sheffield-Manchester- Preston-Blackpool probably wouldn't be viable for a football day return due to the journey time either.
