Anyone who has visited Atherstone station in the past may know that there used to be a footbridge providing access between platforms up until recently.

Anyway London Midland decided to remove the bridge due to safety and rather than replace it they are using a road underpass nearby for platform access.

The road through the underpass is hardly used, but the pavement is narrow and although new lighting was installed by LM and pavement resurfaced, it just doesn't do the job.

A young guy was attacked though there last Autumn with a knife and it has put a lot of people off using the station and some of the locals are opting for the Bus to get to Nuneaton/Tamworth. There are quite often thugs hanging around the station.

What are the chances of getting a footbridge, ramp reinstalled?

I was under the impression that the management of footbridges at stations fell under the responsibility of the infrastructure controller not the station operator?

Would it have been a London Midland decision or Network Rail's decision?

Either way, it's probably best to contact your local MP and get them on side.

So was I initially. But it was in the local paper that London Midland had teamed up with Warwickshire County Council to fund and carry out the works.

I think LM had to do a certain amount of infrastructure work as part of their franchise agreement.

I think any work that involves track (including bridges over said track) fall under NR.

Ahh. Probably why they are using an existing underpass then. Palm the work onto LM and its cheap.

Atherstone has never struck me as the kind of place that would have 'thugs'! I'd have though the population was low enough to allow you to know whoever was robbing you or at least be able to guess where they live...

The town itself has a population of around 10,000 and there are numerous villages surrounding it. The villages house a high social demographic but the town itself is probably 70% plus social housing with many out of work at present.

A lot of chavs use the shelter on platform 2 as a regular late afternoon/evening hangout. Sometimes there are groups of middle aged men with cans of beers sitting in there waving at trains and messing about.
