Trivia: Rarest BR locos to survive into preservation

Not all the 14s went into industrial service and not all were nationalised industries. It was also not a majority to the NCB. Disposal was as follows: Scrapped: 8 Coal industry: 19 Steel industry: 23 Cement industry: 3 Oil industry: 3 Anyone wanting to know more about them, I would recommend...

Trivia: Rarest BR locos to survive into preservation

They owe their survival to their time in industry. For a preserved line, they are pretty much ideal: can be used for shunting (much better visibility from the cab than an 08), p-way work and also working passenger trains. The 40mph top speed doesn’t matter on such railways and from an...

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

Which might explain why the Aventra has been so poor, because Talent 3 has also been a disaster - most notably with ÖBB cancelling their Talent 3 order and going to Siemens instead.

    European rail trackers/RTT/Traksy etc

Ah yes. I’ve never had a need to use that (yet).

    European rail trackers/RTT/Traksy etc

Germany has https://bahn.expert/ which although it is by station, shows the schedule of a train if you click through. It doesn’t show freight/non-passenger services but for many DB workings it will show the stock allocation including vehicle numbers, if you pick the option to turn it on.

How much to hire a train?

The GBRf pool codes give a pretty good idea of which locos can work where. GBCT (GBRf Class 92 Channel Tunnel): 92032/044 GBSL (GBRf Class 92 Sleeper): 92006/014/020/023/033 GBST (GBRf Class 92 Sleeper & Tunnel): 92010/018/028/038/043 That suggests that the locos in pools GBCT and GBST have...

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

Good to see WCRC treating its customers with contempt by not providing them with any heating while charging them £65 for a ticket. It’s not exactly warm up there at the moment.

PF/UKRT Western Champion 'One Way Wizzo' Railtour 14/4/24

It doesn’t support that at all. Any preserved loco will have technical minder(s) with it who will need to go into the engine room, where they will need ear defenders. So probably just a convenient place to keep them.

    Football

Two fantastic Champions League Quarter Final second legs tonight with both PSG (against Barcelona) and Borussia Dortmund (vs Atletico Madrid) overturning first-leg deficits to go through. Not a good night for the Spanish teams!

Differences in rolling stock safety regulations in mainland Europe compared to UK

One of the most impressive bits of station working I have seen was at Zürich Hbf terminal platforms, when a push-pull double deck sets arrived with 5mins for reversal and departure onwards. Except there were two old style EW I/II coaches on the back for a party of school children. Late...
