Does Southern ever use their class 377/6 and 7s on non metro routes?

In short no, The DC bus line connects the shoegear at either end of the train, it has tappings from it to the high speed circuit breakers (main DC breaker on each coach). It is always continuous, and the only switching devices are physical switches between shore supply and shoegear. When in AC...

Does Southern ever use their class 377/6 and 7s on non metro routes?

no, the DC bus runs the entire length of one unit, in the case of Electrostars only having shoegear on the outer driving coaches this carries the DC through to the MOSL(or the other DMOS in the case of only having one end on the third rail). This is the same for Desiros on DC and has become...

Take a look here and you should find your answers!

    Great Northern Fleet Tender

IMO the Linux/windows thing is more a training thing for drivers, than a class compatibilty limitation. The way all the systems communicate on a train are the same, only the computer plugged onto the end to interface with the train is different.

Does Southern ever use their class 377/6 and 7s on non metro routes?

As far as I know they are simply not getting a supply to the high voltage side, they still have all normal DC control voltages, and whether they are able to regen brake via the brake resistors I don't know.

What are these things on the bogies of some 377s?

They are tab washers, used to help prevent a fastening from working loose over time (and vibration). Theoretically if you torque a fastener correctly you shouldn't have an issue, but these provide a visual confirmation as well as a functional 'lock'on the fastener. This looks like a bogie back...

Does Southern ever use their class 377/6 and 7s on non metro routes?

You slightly misunderstand. On DC the MCM is fed via the high speed circuit breaker, which is fed via the DC bus line. On AC the dc bus line isn’t used, so ok DC you run with 4 MCMs and AC with 3( MOSb doesn’t power up so no MOSb motors). Current limits should be the same for each unit so the...

    Great Northern Fleet Tender

Realistically, making the 379s compatible for multiple working with 387s would only mean a series of mods to bring them up to spec, not a complete redesign of the train. They already have the same DOO camera system, fitment of ASDO will likely be just to fit the beacon on the underside of the...

    Electrostar vibrations

That, or if just after braking, the brake resistor fan was always a good one for excessive vibrations at a certain point in its life, a vibration limited to motor coaches mind you.

    Great Northern Fleet Tender

Whilst the Mitrac interface cab side might run from different operating systems, the Mitrac system as a whole is one and the same system. The 379s are closer to a 387 than anything else (DOO/CCTV systems are the same, and I believe they also have the required redundant network bus through the...

Is third rail bad at acceleration?

I mean, batteries to supplement 3rd rail sounds like a good solution to me, but I would have trackside batteries that could trickle charge off peak and discharge in the peaks, providing extra power straight to the 3rd rail, removing any modifications to trains? Thinking about it, add regen...

    Gatwick Airport station upgrade

Out of curiosity, which platform (out of 4 and 7) has been made bi-directional, and what track alterations were made to facilitate it?

    Thameslink Core pantograph strike

lets be honest, should there be a protection system? yes. is there likely going to be one? probably not. If I were to do one, I'd simply have a wire parallel to the run off wire, that would create a circuit to be completed by the bridging the wires with the carbons of the pan and trigger a REC...

GTR On board recorded announcements, how often do they get updated?

So, on southern the 377s have an ‘SDO database’ that, as it sounds, is a database of all platforms and the number of cars that are released at each station platform. At stations with multiple platform lengths these generally have to be reinforced with platform beacons to ensure the correct...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

I wonder, whether this will be the first fleet to spend more time in storage than running in service before requiring a major overhaul? Whilst they have done little mileage, some components will have a ticking clock before they have to be replaced (thinking of rubberised suspension components...
