Why not contact the Gloucestershire-Warwickshire railway and ask how much it cost to build the Hayles Abbey Halt platform? This is a simple timber-faced structure built by volunteers. I'm sure in return for a donation to the fundraising for their current viaduct repairs they would advise.
I think I would regard a line around the shed as a 'first iteration' to establish a connection between North and South. In the fullness of time an alternative location for the shed could allow the layout to be revisited. Although there is a height difference to overcome, I guess a chord into the...

Given that a lot of effort and expenditure has been put into upgrading the shed, what is the current thinking on reinstating the railway round or through the shed once the reunification is complete?

And why should the railway afford to raise the bridge? It's the road-users who have grown their vehicles over the last decades, so should pay for any road improvements.
If you look at the geometry of the chord to the main line you will realise that to achieve this the junction would essentially be on the bridge, there just isn't room. And I can imagine that operationally there needs to be room for a full-length train to get off the chord and wait on NR metals...
It does seem completely wrong to destroy a locomotive which is currently under restoration, hardly a Barry hulk, to support new builds.
Perhaps Didcot will listen to public opinion and restore 7027 alongside the new builds?
