Recommendations for an Eastern European country to visit for rail travel

Hungary has a fantastic network, plenty of loco hauled and some beautiful cities to visit. Balaton, Gyor-Veszprem, the lines to Balassagyamat, the lines around Pecs are probably the prettiest i've ridden there, along with the ride over the high Hungarian plains from Debrecen to Eger. The whole...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

Haha, typical of me to get the wrong cricketer! I hold my hands up to not being a sports fan :)

Trivia: Rare and unusual bus and coach types

Single deck dominators weren't exactly common, especially the less than pretty ELC bodied ones. A couple for Barrow in Furness, and 6 for Hartlepool. There were more bodied by Marshall, but even then only around 30 I think? Staying with East Lancs, Raisbeck motors ran a rare, if not unique Volvo...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

Flown by Captain Botham, with outdoor plane toilets and mushy peas on all flights? :)

    Cryptic clues = station name

Go-van is correct, van meaning from or by in Dutch! I can't comment on the orange thing, far too political ;) I was tempted to give it to John Griffiths with New Holland, one of those ones where the clue turns out to nicely fit more than one station!

    Cryptic clues = station name

Not Harwich, New Holland, Netherfield or Datchet. Hint- the trains serving this station are primarily orange, although the livery isn't, to my knowledge, linked to the Dutch part of my clue

European cities with ‘classic’ bus/tram still in service

It will have been an Ikarus, either 260 or 280. All gone now sadly, since late last year. Even the 280Tr trolleys have been replaced. Still ancient Ganz trams on the 47/49, and Tatras on line 1 and the route up to the childrens railway, the nuimber of which I've forgotten. Was in Olomouc two...

No working toilet on the train.

Dumping sewage onto tracks is horrible for trackworkers. Toilets should of course be serviced and available. But, with my risk assessment head on, perhaps allowing a tank to overflow for the last few hours of a diagram onto hopefully remote tracks that may not be visited by a worker for weeks...

Ticket machines: Why has QWERTY been abandoned?

Off topic, but touch screens are a nightmare. Benign essential tremor, Parkinsons etc. No consideration whatsoever is given to sufferers of these diseases (myself included). Another reason I hate TVMs, also unmanned gateline barriers. Inserting tickets or even holding a phone QR code can be...

Ticket machines: Why has QWERTY been abandoned?

Agree totally. The older Yokogawa DCS (distributed control system) keyboards used to control the plants where I worked were ABC layout, whereas of course all the PCs etc were QWERTY. Whilst most of the DCS work didn't involve typing, when it did inevitably I'd end up typing everything twice...
