Bomb squad called after over 1,000 railway detonators found underwater

The Hollinwood Branch Canal including Crime Lake & Sammy's Basin was owned by the LNER until nationalisation in 1948, maybe there's some connection? The locks there were last used in 1933 when coal was delivered by boat for the lock -keeper (Sammy!) and the pumping engine to keep the summit...

Why did Rose Hill Marple survive the cuts of the 60s??

Marple to Manchester by car or bus is epic, Stockport is nearer but also takes ages. Trains from Marple or Rosehill frequent and quick by comparison. There are a lot of people live in Marple. There's been a proposal to run trains Marple to Stockport via Guide Bridge- a long way round but...

Heinz Factory near Wigan to get its own siding?

Wasn't there a Speedlink service years ago bringing cans from Metal Box Co to Heinz? Used to run round at Ashbury's loop in Manchester with a 37 and a (very) few vans. Did Heinz have a siding then? I might be on the wrong track there?

Guide Bridge station , passenger subway?

A search of "Guide Bridge Station old photos" will reveal many hundreds of interesting images from Victorian times to present day. Those showing the subway in the background are generally from the platforms and feature 8Fs and the like.

Guide Bridge station , passenger subway?

I was often on the station from about 1959 onwards and have no recollection of a subway between platforms 1,2/3,4. I recently was looking at some old photos from early 1950s and they definitely show staircase entry to a subway and signs directing to other platforms. The question is why? There...

TRIVIA: Stations that used to have Excursion Platforms

Belle Vue station had excursion platforms as well as an ancient PA system for train announcements, part of which I acquired in 1970 when the station buildings were being demolished.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates, CP6

Part of Park Parade viaduct fell down during its construction. I don't think there's been serious problems since then. Sometimes the Liverpool - Drax biomass trains are diverted over it at 2000+ tonnes, they seem to manage ok, are they not rated > RA3? Is it a ploy to extract money , to...

    Netherton tunnel

Netherton canal tunnel had gas lights installed. Later changed to electric lights powered from a water turbine generator at one end (northern?) of the tunnel. The head of water for the turbine was derived from the upper "Old Main Line" canal that crossed the Netherton Branch here. A very modern...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates, CP6

So, does that mean that Ardwick to Guide Bridge needs a new scheme if it's part of TRU?Complete new overheads? Think of the expense. When I was very young I can recall seeing the gantries being re-painted , they would have been about 10 years old then. A recent close inspection of samples of...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates, CP6

Why?Most of the gantries to Ardwick from GB are original 1950s and seem to work ok. One of the long gantries over Brookside was clobbered by a crane years ago . It remained in place ,rather bent for a while , gone now though. I think some in the area we are talking about were demolished when the...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates, CP6

No picture, but i have the letter here. There's been overhead line work going on overnight and week-ends between Fairfield and Guide Bridge, a worksite base is established at Manshaw Road,(road access to the line) near Fairfield. I suspect this maybe upgrade work in connection with TRU, nearly...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates, CP6

I was using 60+ year old junction names! I am a bit surprised that GB west is where it is , being as the old Stockport Junction, in it's minimalist form is at the west side of the Station and GB West is at the east side, though it is west of GB East Junction, still operational ,I think? :D The...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates, CP6

A letter arrived at a relative's house from Network Rail today. Addressed to "Railway Neighbour" . The content is to inform that piling work this coming weekend 16th/17th will be in progress at Guide Bridge for electrification from Guide Bridge to Stalybridge as part of TRU. The work area is...

Track machines Guide Bridge yard 30/08/21

No idea on IDs but you can get a good view of them from the north side of the yard. Access from the end of the station car park, down the path, over the long footbridge and along the path to Pottinger Street canal bridge. There's more to be seen from the canal towpath slightly east of that...
