    Emergency repairs at Chesterfield Station

Just passed through platform 1 on a northbound XC, at speed so didn’t get much of a look. From what I saw looking at P2, there was no work going on on the platform edges but there was what looked like scaffolding and blue netting around the canopy support structures. Made me think the work is a...

XC - Leave our train early and use another company

Good grief, this forum at times. Talk about mountains out of molehills. The TM of a heavy-loaded short-formed long-distance train was obviously just trying to exercise a bit of common sense, in inviting passengers making shorter, more local journeys to use trains that were likely to be less...

Should Heathrow Express be abolished, to enable more Crossrail trains to Terminal 5?

Totally agree, it’s very expensive but has its place. I have used it in the past to make connections from central London which I’d otherwise have missed, and got to my destination over an hour later. Late at night, that’s worth the premium to me. It is also very much more civilised and relaxing...

Train cancelled as "they forgot to rota a driver"

My previous airline had a “report sick” function on the crew control system, to avoid having to bother them with a call. Log on, click a button and it’s done. I assume a crew controller gets some sort of instant notification their end, and they cover the flight straight away. My current place...

Bicester stations - break of journey

All genuinely very interesting this, ladies and gents, and appreciated; however, while I’m proficient enough with the basic principles of routes and split tickets etc, I’m not confident enough and don’t have the motivation or inclination to get involved in a debate about the finer points and...

Bicester stations - break of journey

Yeah we already have, thanks. Coach + a lift it will have to be. Last trains are a little later than that, around 8pm-ish, but still far too early.

Bicester stations - break of journey

The 0001 Oxford on the night in question (which would be our likely option if we miss the 2307 and 2311) doesn’t, among others. I’ll check before departure and buy the cheapest appropriate walk-up. 1670666250 Sorry to drag this back to the top…. Just seen that Chiltern have a much-reduced...

Bicester stations - break of journey

Thought as much, that was my interpretation too. Either a High Wycombe or a Haddenham & Thame Parkway to Bicester Village (depending on which train we end up on) will do the job. An Advance won't do as we don't know which one we'll be on, but £8.50 single from High Wycombe is fine. Never...

Bicester stations - break of journey

Afternoon all. I'm planning a trip from Sutton Coldfield to London in a couple of weeks, meeting up with a friend who lives in Bicester who will be joining me on the way down at Bicester North. I was intending to use a Super Off Peak Return on Chiltern and walk from New St to Moor St. I might...

Should I pursue a career as a pilot or a train driver?

Can highly endorse all the above. I’m also a captain, 11 years on the A320 series and just approaching 4 on the 737-800. When I started from scratch in 2006, the training school’s connections made it possible to obtain the funding by way of an unsecured loan (it was roughly half the cost it is...

    Unusual Diversions.

2004-5ish, Central Trains Birmingham - Nottingham via Nuneaton and Leicester service (assume this was a timetabled service back then.) Both ways on the particular weekend, the route between Trent junction and Nottingham via Beeston was shut, so we went up the Erewash line as far as a crossover...

    Cross Country weekend diversions.

Makes a bit more sense now! Easy to assume “diverted between Sheffield and Chesterfield” means via Barrow Hill - not sure I’d consider this a “diversion” but at least it gives some context to what’s happening!

    Cross Country weekend diversions.

According to NRE, diversions via Barrow Hill between Chesterfield and Sheffield this coming weekend. Also published on EMR website, but RTT still shows everything operating via Dronfield as normal. (Edited to remove duff assumption)

EMR multiple cancellations at Derby, Sunday 6 Feb.

Also noticed this just by chance. Seemed (from Traksy and what was written on EMR journey updates) that it eventually managed to get as far as Belper, where everyone got off and then boarded a rescue unit sent from Derby to complete the journey. Looked like most EMR Sheffields around that time...
