I genuinely have no idea, but with the barcodes tickets it is very easy to identify every transaction made (sometimes over a number of websites if they use the same platform) by the ticket holder.

I don't know if this interaction is going to lead to any further action, but train operating companies do have fraud teams who will monitor their systems for suspicious patterns. A large volume of refunds may well trigger this.

The line provides public transport to a very remote part of the country and that is and should always be its primary function. I don't think it would be a good idea to give a heritage operation primacy over a line that is not at any risk of closure. You are quite probably right, I doubt it makes...

I recall something similar happening to a 158 a number of years ago (I'm sure it was still First running Scotrail) between Inverness and Wick. It caused an awful lot of damage, trees can be quite dangerous especially if you run into them at speed!

You will not have any trouble with having unopened alcohol on your person on Scotrail services.

I believe it is in the seated car which has the train guard's office. The Sleepers are hauled by class 73s (sometimes 66s with a 73 providing the hotel power) north of Edinburgh.

This would absolutely be the way forward in the medium-term. Some kind of Turbostar 2.0 in three or four car sets. I've always felt the door arrangement complaints re. the 170s overblown - it's Scotland, it's cold sometimes, there is a button to close the door if you really want to before it...
