    Trivia: Railway related murals

Railway Avenue, Rotherhithe has a loco and carriages mural between the station entrance and the Brunel Museum.

TPE v Northern as a guard

Worked for both as a guard many years ago. TPE had night work at my depot, but much less demanding in terms of diagrams, changing rosters, etc. Felt more valued at TPE, but constantly back watching because high standards meant you couldn't put a foot out of place. TPE had the benefit of...

North Western Trains - London Euston - Manchester Airport

Such a shame the original plans for the Adelantes/Class 180s to London never went ahead, which died when FirstBus took full control of GWR, and thus NWT. The white/blue/orange "exploding Xmas pudding" livery looked quite smart, but would have been a bugger to keep clean.

    M&S Food at stations

Brighton has recently reopened in the last week or so.

    Expensive station car parks...

I remember many years ago you used to get white CCST with 'Parking' written on (vice 'British Rail') which you then took to the ticket office, and they knocked it off the price of your travel ticket(s). That way the parking was 'free' but wasn't abused by non-railway ticket holders abusing the...

ScotRail HST derailment at Dalwhinnie (10/04/2021)

ROG driven, no injuries, thankfully. Rear coach and power car involved.

Is Now The Time To Relaunch Plusbus

Despite living in what I would call 'prime' PlusBus territory, being in Brighton, I didn't bother renewing my annual this year, which I normally do along with my Annual Gold Card. This is despite the 'inter-availability' across all companies, and the significant discount over a normal Brighton...

Can you take bikes on replacement buses?

I already pay £3k for an Annual Gold Card, and because of engineering work, usually on Sundays, I have to take a bicycle with me as there is no direct tube or rail replacement bus provided, otherwise I would be late for my shift. How much more should I pay for a crap service?

Can you take bikes on replacement buses?

Yes, operating on specific routes. There was previously a much larger fleet of the vehicle type, but as the fleet was renewed and dual-doors became popular, the operator and council lost interest, and is now weekend only I think. Effectively the whole nearside was tip up seats until the rear...

Can you take bikes on replacement buses?

Ironically in Brighton we have buses on which you can take bikes, but if the same vehicle is operating a rail replacement, you can't take the bikes on board! Both are Go-Ahead/Govia as well, so they can't even agree internally!

Fantasy: If there was only one London terminal/mainline station

In a parallel universe where perhaps Thatcher hadn't won in 1983, the UK joined Schengen, NSE/BR hadn't been privatised.... CTRL/Thameslink 2000 would have been constructed as a joint scheme, far sooner. Crossrail would be a regional scheme, rather than London centric. Chel-ney/Crossrail 2...

    Stations you would rename.

Bow Brickhill to Caldecotte & Tilbrook (for the Open University). Woburn Sands to Hogsty End (original name!) Ridgmont is closer to Brogborough/Amazon. Salford Central to Trinity. Gorton to Openshaw. Belle Vue to Belle Vue & Gorton, or (just) Gorton.

Trivia: Station names that do not reflect where they are

Gorton should really be called Openshaw, being closer to that local centre. Likewise Belle Vue, Pleasure Gardens long since "gone" should really be called Gorton. My family surname is Ashbury, and my family do hail from the Ardwick area (at the back of Longsight Depot, New Bank Street), and I...

The proposed Northern Ireland to Scotland tunnel - it is now confirmed will not be built

As the earlier poster alluded to, surely the true market is/was Dublin - London, which, along with Amsterdam - London, is/was one of the busiest air travel markets in Europe. Given that HS2 was being built as far as Crewe, an upgrade of the North Wales Coast Line, and a tunnel beyond Holyhead...

Possible alternative to Leeds Bradford Airport Parkway ?

If TfL get desperate for funds, Boris' Dangleway might become available for a knock down price. However would defeat the object by making it even more difficult for aircraft landing/take-off. In all the years I lived, studied and worked in West Yorkshire, I never used it once. Tried...
