Approach Speeds and Speed limits at Stations and Platforms

Slightly off topic, but where is the fastest through station, can one stand on a platform with trains passing at over 100mph? Obviously not including fly overs etc, I mean passing beside or inbetween platforms.

Male violence against women in the UK

This whole situation is very difficult, but I must confess being happy to see no one shutting down conversation due to them simply being men, and "Mansplaining" (Maybe because most/all posters are men?) Having been the victim of three different abusive women, I naturally take a defensive stance...

    Trapped on a train

Can you share any details or link to the other forum? Likewise I don't believe this at all, and why were they going on a jolly during a global pandemic? I hate parents who justify their children's bad behaviour by using their youth as an excuse. Not all of us did such silly things when young...

    What train encapulates your childhood?

Great Western Trains Intercity 125s with screaming Valenta engines. I got back into trains about 2011 and saw a few HSTs, thought I'd lost my hearing as I remember covering my ears due to that loud engine sound and no longer heard it!

Being sick/ill at school when you were young

I had 14 years of school, and did not miss a single day in all those years. Other students, however... My mum said she knew a girl in her school, who was off sick often, people used to joke about her, until one day, they were told she had died. I try not to be judgemental!

Where to see classic locos on the mainline

Thank you Peter, I've always wanted to ride on that Chiltern service. Do they run daily? Thank you, is the station the best place to spot those, or are there any other good spots in the Derby area? A shame, I had a work meeting today, but will try to get out and see some test trains. Do they...

Where to see classic locos on the mainline

Hello, I hope I'm not too late to the game, but would really like to know any recommendations of locations or workings where I can see loco hauled trains, either passenger or freight, which are not 66 hauled. I am based in the West Midlands at the moment and I understand there may be some 60s...

Which camera to choose? (and other questions) - from a complete novice

I would definitely recommend an SLR style camera. Don't buy into the idea that phone cameras or cheap basic cameras take just as good photos. The difference is very obvious when you actually give more than a quick glance at photos taken. My DSLR (admittedly quite high spec) which was released in...

    How old are railway tracks?

I was wondering the other day: I remember seeing some old rotting wooden sleepers and pretty elderly looking track still in use a few years back and was thinking, how old would you say the oldest track and sleepers are that are still in use on the network? Excluding heritage tracks, how long...

    Oldest livery/interior still in use

Do you mean any still have NSE interiors? I thought they would be long gone. Or did you mean the seat frame and interior layout is original? 1611070312 That's a good shout, although they have recently revised their livery I do believe. Chiltern is actually one of the few companies I haven't yet...

    Oldest livery/interior still in use

I thought all Southeastern's units would be in that blue now, although I haven't lived in Kent since 2017. 16 years is a long time in a single livery. I wonder what the longest lasting livery on a single train would be? Potentially some slam door EMUs in BR blue and grey..

    Oldest livery/interior still in use

Does anyone know what trains have the oldest unrefurbished livery or interior? Obviously we would have to discount heritage railways here. I remember Greater Anglia having some One liveried stock a few years back but I'm sure that's not current. So which trains have livery of long gone operators...

    Old fashioned stations still existing

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I am a big fan of old railway photographs from the final days of steam. I was wondering if anyone knew of any 'historic' stations surviving around the UK with old wooden or brick Victorian or Edwardian station buildings still in situ. Great if wooden...

Trivia: Most annoying sound made by a train

The almighty bang when sitting in a 150 with a fast train passing. That rattling sound when accelerating.

    Most historic station

Hello everyone, I would love to know anyone's ideas as to some of the countries most "Historic" and unspoilt stations. I am thinking back to those old photos we have all seen of the 50s and 60s, stations with old Victorian or Edwardian station buildings, gas or early electric lamps, maybe an...
