Your tickets weren't valid for that train. I don't know why you were apparently expecting that permission to board would mean permission to use an invalid ticket. When buying on your app it would have clearly stated something like 'specified train only' for the ticket you selected.

Checked the routeing guide and don't think Canterbury is on any permitted routes from London to Folkestone.

The restriction code for this fare has just been changed from YX to KX but the associated text for the restriction has not yet been added to the database. From looking at the 'unpublished data' it appears this is meant to be valid for your journey as it bars travel out of Paddington up to 10:03...

If your first train runs late and this causes you to miss your connection then your ticket will still be valid to travel.

Like the 'last train to Leeds' after the cup match next week where standard class reservations had run out, this is another case of LNER trying to overcharge a passenger by only offering a first class ticket. This false compulsory reservations nonsense needs to be brought to an end.
