loco lifting service tunnel. An engin would arrive at ground level, drop on a lift and be able to travel under the road and under the works to the area where it was to be worked on. Again, the carpark side has been filled in, but the tunnels under the remaining parts of the works a still there, but are used for service tunnels to provide cabling and pipework under the works. Chances of them being reopened or having public access is less than zero unfortunately.
- My info comes from a friend who was ex-works and remembers the tunnels, and another friend who is fire service and has access to all the tunnels for surveying and safety check purposes. My interest is in the local history side and a fascination with tunnels(!), rather than the rail side of things. If you have any other "tunnel" info or questions, I'd love to hear.
