Bus restoration blog - former North Western KJA299G

Sorry jp4712, should have given a time frame - I lived next to The Bamford Arms in Heaviley from 1950 (2 yrs old) to 1963 (14 yrs old), so your bus is too young for me to have seen then. However, I have lived in Stockport all my life (apart from college 'darn scarf') so could well have seen it...

Bus restoration blog - former North Western KJA299G

That bus looks fabulous, and brings back many memories... When a boy lived just 200 yards from the North Western Charles Street garage - across the cemetery. Often went to look over the wall to see if there was anything interesting in the yard. As the engineering and company HQ I suppose all the...

    Northern 'conductors'?

Northern advertising (on this Forum!) for 'Conductors' to work from Buxton. What is the difference between a 'conductor' and a guard?

Trivia: Instances where you have benefitted from a delayed train

Just pre-covid booked on Euston to Stockport - heard on news wires down near Watford so went to Euston early and found my train cancelled. Went to ticket office and changed ticket for earlier train that was running at no cost. Arrived Stockport at time of original train, AND received...

Railway locations that are now only a shadow of themselves

Cheadle Heath - Midland main line, 4 platforms, carriage sidings, goods shed, Midland Pullman (the original) and now a single line freight route. Gowhole Yard, near New Mills South Junction, was a busy place until the 60s.

    Best looking Rolling Stock Liveries?

Back in the late 1950s with maroon coaching stock and (usually dirty) steam locomotives the railways were, in my eye, drab and miserable places. Even the Brits hauling the Palatine Express were not particularly well looked after. Living in South Manchester though, we were about to begin the...

Closed lines you have travelled on.

Potteries Loop Line from Etruria via Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall and Goldenhill to join the Stoke - Manchester line near Kidsgrove. Circa 1960 on a diverted* Euston to Manchester train hauled by EE Type 4 - D217 if memory serves. * Perhaps line closed for early electrification work?

Trivia: Station pairs with a direct service between them but minimal demand

Middlewood to either Hazel Grove or Disley - the station IS in the middle of a wood, and no parking, and little or no habitation for a mile or so in any direction. Bt the time a traveller has walked to Middlewood station to get the train, you could nearly walk to Hazel Grove or Disley instead!
