Request for help: LNER Fare Trial Ripoff

At the risk of going way off topic I'm not sure there has been a time when rail fares have been less than the petrol cost of a journey. Would be interesting to see such analysis.

Request for help: LNER Fare Trial Ripoff

The OP is proposing a similar stunt that has been covered many times before that it can be cheaper to fly from somewhere in the UK to a destination in Europe and back to a final destination in the UK for less than the rail fare. Its not a new idea and it just reinforces the idea that all rail...

Request for help: LNER Fare Trial Ripoff

There are plenty of trains running today with ticket prices of £70 or less and even under £60 on Lumo on the 12.18. While I'm not a fan of what LNER is doing this idea that there are no reasonably priced tickets available any more is not correct. Weekends have become the new peak period and...

Request for help: LNER Fare Trial Ripoff

Comes back to the point that no-one can answer - how do you define affordability to the ordinary passenger? What is an affordable fare for a trip between London and Edinburgh, how is it determined, should that fare be available on all trains, if not what proportion of trains, should there just...

Request for help: LNER Fare Trial Ripoff

You have just given examples of cheaper ways to travel between London and Edinburgh and made the point I was trying to make that headline fares often bare little resemblance to the average fares paid. OP's type publicity often just reinforces a perception that all rail fares everywhere are...

Request for help: LNER Fare Trial Ripoff

I am not clear what the outcome the OP is trying to achieve with this exercise. That all rail staff take a 20% pay cut so that rail fares can be reduced, that the rail service to Edinburgh is reduced so only trains that are 100% fully loaded continue to operate to bring down the cost of...

it’s a fairly safe bet that standard class passengers and taxpayers will indeed be paying for 1st class refreshments.

It is if you are getting 30% more revenue out of a person and you are not preventing a standard class passenger from travelling. Not that many trains are 100% full.

it’s a fairly safe bet that standard class passengers and taxpayers will indeed be paying for 1st class refreshments.

As many businesses and public sector bodies ban the use of first class, staff can use standard premium so its a good way of utilising space that otherwise would have been empty and get higher revenue than from standard alone while still catering for the few remaining passengers who are prepared...

it’s a fairly safe bet that standard class passengers and taxpayers will indeed be paying for 1st class refreshments.

First class revenue is way way down on pre-COVID, far more than revenue as a whole. Those peak first class ticket sales have gone and while first advance sales may be doing okay they don't make up more than a small share of the revenue lost.

    The 2024 London Mayoral Election

The Mayor can deliver on buses but rail is dependent on third parties which as we know means years of delay and exorbitant costs to achieve

    Books on Pakistan Railways?

The only books I have seen referenced are very old and hence mainly relate to the period before partition. Hundred Years of Pakistan Railways: Pakistan Western Railway 1861-1961, Pakistan Eastern Railway, 1862-1962 Malik, M. B. K. Published by Ministry of Railways and Communications, Karachi...

Terms and conditions - Open Access Operators compared to "conventional" TOCs

For drivers and on-board staff what if any are the main differences in terms and conditions between the various open access operators and other passenger train operating companies, given the owning companies of the former are the same as the latter?

    The 2024 London Mayoral Election

Has any candidate, apart from Count Binface, published their manifestos yet? There seem to be various announcements but not seen all their policies set out anywhere. There are a number of unclear statements about Sadiq Kahn wanting to set up a publically owned bus company but its not clear if...
