Differences in rolling stock safety regulations in mainland Europe compared to UK

I believe this was (at least until recently) also the case in Germany - admittedly my only source for this is a German train simulator penalising you if you don't do it, but considering that train simulator is Zusi 3, which is used to train actual drivers...

    2023 Israel - Hamas war

But the key thing to remember is that most of Netanyahu's unpopularity is due to corruption, the business with the judiciary, and other domestic issues. The protests would be much, much, smaller if those issues were not present but his policy towards the Palestinians did not change.

Repatriating La Moye - has anyone heard anything?

An update on the situation; a few months ago Eskom put a bid out to find organisations willing to take La Moye and four of Eskom's other steam locos for a five-year lease. However it appears they are only interested in South African organisations, so that seems to put a bit of a kibosh on the...

Belfast Dublin Enterprise service upgrade funded

City centre stations in the US tend to have bloated platform numbers because of the lack of through-running infrastructure and services - Philadelphia is IIRC the sole exception. NY is a rather aggravating example because Amtrak trains through-run through Penn Station, but commuter trains don't...

Is green electricity subsidising rail freight?

Until electric trucks become widespread. The "oh you can't impose emissions regulations on us, trucking is worse" argument will not hold up soon, if it ever did.

Railway Industry Association - A new strategy for delivering a lower cost, higher performing net zero railway by 2050

Probably of interest - of particular note is that the argument that nearly all services could be electrified via battery trains if just 66% of the network was electrified...

    Class 503 disposal

Part of the problem - and I've said this on other forums - is that the danger the unit was in wasn't made clear until it was too late.

The BBC article doesn't suggest that diesel will be used, though admittedly they may have got it wrong.

Beeching Cuts and the Big Four

Biddle does not discuss to what proportion property sales formed a source of capital. Reading chapter 12 of Gourvish's British Railways, property sales are not mentioned as a major source of income - asset sales are indeed only briefly mentioned as one source of income alongside direct borrowing...

    Class 503 disposal

I wonder what the outcome would be if the various EMU preservation groups came together to see if by pooling funds undercover storage could be obtained.

Beeching Cuts and the Big Four

Do you have a source for this? I have not heard the claim "selling off assets from closed lines provided the money to upgrade intercity lines" before, and I'd have thought it would have been brought up a lot from defenders of Beeching.

Deployment of the Revolution Very Light Rail Variant

I presume the idea is that the RVLR operates during the day and the freight trains during the night, so the same parties that would be party to any agreement about making changes to the timetable.

Could the railways be renationalised under Labour and what should happen in the meantime?

My experience has been that computational brute force is actually quite good at not being able to solve things. See if you phrase it as "giving up" it sounds silly. If you phrase it as "they find other things that they'd have more success/be paid more working on", it doesn't. Good luck with that.

Controversial railway opinions (without a firm foundation in logic..)

Regular services are a different thing from frequent services.

Beeching Cuts and the Big Four

I thought it was rather that Hope Valley had passenger services and Woodhead didn't, as well as the latter being the last remaining outpost of 1500V DC electrification - back in the days of Beeching, when there wasn't much interest in preserving local passenger services, the preference was...
