They've not that long been refurbished, when Cerntral got a bit of a makeover a few years ago. A bit of maintenance wouldn't go amiss but that doesn't mean months of closure.

Not to mention the 'do not travel' warnings every time the wind gets going.
It's a quiet time of the year once the schools go back in Jan, and if there's no big event on, but it would have been hellish in December or during school holidays, or if there was a big match on.
Yeah, Scotland has had much of the worst of it the last week. With extreme weather all travel can be affected.
I've been stranded in the cold outside Preston station too often though to trust Avanti to get me north of Preston one way or the other.
It's got to the point where if there's a bit of rain due or it's windy, I would not risk travelling by train. A short commute at most and that would be with a contingency in place for any return. The railways don't have the contingencies these days.
I wouldn't travel north of Preston with...
Pete for Avanti is ruder. "You're not being kidknapped" the other day when someone complained about their service. And they have the nerve to make be kind posts.
These people shouldn't be working in customer service
It's the same with the railways. When privatised its not the TOCs that maintain infrastructure or pay for upgrades. HS2 for example, it's the taxpayer that pays for the line to be built, not the TOC that will potentially run it (for profit).
The problem with nationalisation is it's only as effective as the government that run it (or as willing as they are to invest in it). Which was why the British Rail rotted so badly from Beeching onwards as the motorcar and roads got all the investmens. Tory governments in particular don't like...
Poor but Christmas Eve tends to be quiet on a lot of routes at least and the fact it's on Sunday most people will have travelled before then. Some of the reasons that have led to a staff shortfall on TOCs will also have meant less demand from passengers on the day.
Not good enough for those who...
Should have a firm 'do no travel' warning for these strong storms, as something always goes wrong on the main west or east coast line (and others).
If you have to travel then you have to travel, but a lot of journeys are non-essential.
