Will you be eating out to help out?

Update - the Statutory Instrument 828, 2020, which deals with the latest restrictions in Greater Manchester etc., does not mention pubs or restaurants at all. So, despite being told we couldn't meet others indoors, that's only advisory and not illegal. However meeting someone in their garden IS...

Local lockdown in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire - Discussion

Last week’s guidance said households should not now mix inside private homes and gardens, pubs or restaurants in Greater Manchester, Calderdale, Bradford, Kirklees or five districts of East Lancashire. On Friday afternoon it was then reported that we can mix outside a pub or restaurant (so in a...

Transport Select Committee 24 June - Including plans to centralise control of Railways

Much of what has been written above is good and is aimed at getting the costs of operating the railway down by reducing duplication and eliminating "misaligned incentives" in the post-Covid world, where there are fewer commuters and where leisure travellers need incentives to try the train...

What might the Government do about Christmas?

Have the current restrictions in the north passed into law yet? I read that, as of yesterday, they had not, in which case they are still "advisory".

Will you be eating out to help out?

On the few occasions I've been to a pub or cafe recently, I've just given my first name and mobile number. They won't know if I was there alone or with others.

Well no-one is going to know, are they!

    Eden Valley Railway - Appleby?

Not surprised to read this as my job with Worcestershire County Council up to 2003 included dealing with Sustrans as part of a study of the Honeybourne line (which had just opened to Cheltenham Racecourse when I left).

I'm in the same position but don't the restrictions apply only to eating indoors? Surely a restaurant with an outdoor seating area is OK. Or find somewhere outside the restricted area.

Trivia: How many countries with a land border with at least one other have no cross-border passenger rail service?

Never heard of these towns, which are effectively joined together. Since Sweden and Finland are in different time zones, Haparanda is one hour behind Tornio, allowing a unique spectacle on New Year's Eve, when people can welcome in the new year twice. Since 2005 the cities have rebranded...

Trivia: How many countries with a land border with at least one other have no cross-border passenger rail service?

In 2016 we were steam-hauled up the long climb from Trieste to Villa Opicina via Aurisina and saw there were trains from Ljubljana crossing the border. The tram had just closed I think and we saw two of the cable tractors parked up. I wondered whether it had reopened but reopening no doubt...

COVID-19, balancing one restriction against another.

I play in an amateur orchestra and the possibility of that restarting is receding further into the future.

Why was the South Eastern division more photographed than the Central?

The Ouse valley or Balcombe Viaduct seems well represented in photographs, the coastal section around Shoreham perhaps.

Local lockdown in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire - Discussion

Same situation for me in Greater Manchester. I live in Littleborough, four miles from the West Yorkshire boundary, no cases or less than 3 in the last week.
