It's intended that freight will not run on HS2. The idea being that the line will be so full of high speed trains there will not be any paths for slow moving freight. They could run them during early morning hours but the time is reserved for maintainance.
There should be intercity style trains for the faster WCML trains that will be the fast trains for Milton Keynes. A ticket for these trains (Liverpool to London) unlikely to be cheaper than HS2 as the high speed line will have a lot of capacity to fill and lower running costs.
They don't seem to have rail specialists who have time to investigate properly so those that do report on the issue tend to regurgitate reports that come there way.
