As I understand the rules for driving lights on a motor vehicle driving on sidelights only is now illegal. In hours of darkness the vehicle should be driven on headlights and the only differences depending on oncoming traffic, bends in road etc are whether the headlamps are full beam or dipped.
I live in the North of England so perhaps haven't been following this project in great detail.

Vintage DMU had a physical clutch followed by a mechanical gearbox. If anything in that drivetrain seized the diesel engine could be damaged so freewheel was included to prevent drivetrain/engine damage.

The question refers to the Bradford FS - Shipley - Leeds - London KX service not the Bradford INT - HX - Brighouse etc service. The Interchange service runs on Wakefield track for part of it's route. There are no 'Wakefield line' track at Shipley Junction.
