Funnily, marshland is normally considered quite an effective way of preventing flooding. It can hold a lot more water than (for example) a golf course or farmland and so prevent water from flooding areas you care more about. But yeah if your railway is in the marshland itself, not so good.

Does the total journey distance really matter to people? Cost and time are going to be the drivers when deciding to travel via a particular route. Distance is of course a factor in both cost and time, but not the only factor, and probably not the most important one in either case.

This is certainly true, at one point Nottingham had like 3 different smart cards that covered different subsets of the buses and trams. And Nottingham is one of the better cities in the UK for public transport.

This is the point. Freiburg is what Cambridge could be, with some vision, ambition and money.

I have no idea. But something has to change if Cambridge keeps growing, even more buses and cars isn't sustainable (in my opinion).
