Vintage sign - is it real?

We had a couple of these in the travel centre at Charing Cross. You could scroll the next from the right to the left or up and down I seem to remember.

Station Announcements back in the days of British Rail.

London Charing Cross sometime in the 80's, "Join the front four coaches only, the part of the train with the lights on!"

    EMR 1L06 - 06:47 Liverpool-Norwich - Saturday 25/03/2023

Why do you need to arrive at Peterborough at 10.39 for a 15.00 kick off? There's plenty of trains that will get there in time. As for strengthening the train to a double unit, what services would you suggest EMR cancel to faciltate this?

Why is there so little freight on Sundays?

Because a large number of freight locomotives and drivers are being used for engineering trains.

Should train driving be a graduate profession?

I joined the railway in 1973 along with another school leaver. Because I had a smattering of GCEs I was told I would be joining t.he clerical grades. My mate had no qualifications and wa given a junior railman role before transferring to the footplate. I asked for a similar transfer and was old...

We used to call it the penal colony. If you had done something bad BR wouldn't sack you, but instead send you the Brick to sort parcels.

Special Starting Salary for Boys on British Railways - London bonus worth all of £10

My salary on joining BR in 1973 as a ticket office clerk was £660 plus half rate London Allowance of £18, just over £13 a week.

    BR driver education

Way back in the early 70s when I left school, a fellow pupil and I applied for jobs on British Rail. I passed the clerical exam and ended up working in ticket offices and planning, my mate failed and ended up working as a junior railman before transferring to the motive power department. I was...

Are there any ‘Easy Win’ electrification projects that are worth looking at?

I'd like to nominate platform 6 at Norwich as an easy bit to do, but quite pointless otherwise.

Longest non-stop distance on former SR lines

Perhaps my memories are wrong, but I'm sure there were two, possibly three, non stop trains between Waterloo East and Dover Priory on a Sunday in connection with the the hovercraft from Dover to Boulogne and train connections to Paris. I think these left Charing Cross at 0700, 1000 and 1300.
