    Derailment near Grange Over Sands

I was told many years ago it’s to do with width rather than length. The 150s are slightly wider than 153/156. The issue would be two meeting at the narrower “six-foot” beneath Bullgill bridge. 1711983742 I may be wrong as I don’t sign 195s but I believe the cable tied part is the anti-roll bar.

    Derailment near Grange Over Sands

I’m not going to say 100% that this didn’t happen (a 195 doing a full run to Carlisle) but I highly doubt it did. Aside from the fact the 195 isn’t cleared there is the crew question. I’d be willing to bet at that time of night the service is Workington crewed north of Barrow and they won’t...

    Derailment near Grange Over Sands

I was told anecdotally that the restriction was for 150s because “they a few inches wider than 153s/156s” it does seem this is the case. The restriction at Bullgill bridge is because the lines have been squeezed under the bridge causing a narrower “six foot”. AIUI The restriction for 150s is...

    Derailment near Grange Over Sands

Again, entirely speculative and I know many people don’t like that so I must make clear that I’m not finger pointing, just trying to add to the discussion of possibilities. I think it is worth considering the possibility that recent tamping work may have either caused damage to, or if the...

    Derailment near Grange Over Sands

The derailment point is pretty much at a decent braking point for Grange Over Sands so it is possible that the train was still near linespeed. Of course there are plenty of other possibilities but a speed of 50+ here would not be unusual.

Does anyone in wigan know why there was a London North Western Railway class 350 at platform 6 today about 13:00?

Could it be you mistook the Class and it was a Class 323. Northern have a number of Class 323s that have joined them that are in West Midlands Railway livery.

Storm Isha may affect your journey in parts of England, Scotland and Wales on Sunday 21 and Monday 22 January

I think it’s Saltcoats in Scotland if it’s the same image I’ve seen in previous storms. It seems their go-to image.

TRIVIA: The shortest tunnels on the national rail network that are officially classed as tunnels

A few short tunnels in the Liverpool area. Copperas Hill Tunnel at Lime Street is listed at 27 yards. Tunnel Road Tunnel at Edge Hill is 58 yards (on 3 of the lines). Crown Street Tunnel between Lime Street and Edge Hill is 57 yards. Picko No1 on the Bootle Branch is 52 yards and Spellow...

Trivia - stationless towns with the nearest station in a different county

Regarding the Leigh discussion. Within the Leigh parliamentary constituency nearby Golborne, Greater Manchester should fit the bill. It has no station (anymore) despite the WCML passing through. The nearest station is Newton le Willows in Merseyside.

Trivia - stationless towns with the nearest station in a different county

Longtown in Cumbria. Closer to Gretna Green than Carlisle.

"High-speed Dash" on Heart of Wales - train makes up 44 minutes over two legs

I used to work a line with request stops and we wouldn’t pass anywhere more than a minute early. If we were 2-3 mins early I would’ve had the driver stop. It wasn’t worth getting a complaint for leaving early. That said. I may be misremembering but I’m sure the conditions of carriage used to...

    Caledonian Sleeper

I suspect but can’t prove use of road transport comes down to who get blamed. I’m train crew and have been on numerous taxi rides of 3+ hours on motorways while the railway next door is closed or has a blanket speed limit in place due to weather. The taxi is however ploughing through standing...

    Post pass out mistakes

When I first passed out I occasionally wasn’t disciplined enough at getting to bed and was fatigued next day (nothing major but even an extra hour of tv can be bad) I quickly found ensuring I got a good nights sleep made a world of difference to my work. Likewise getting to work relaxed is a...

    Connection nonsenses

Obviously not. I’m willing to accept I’m wrong but out of interest I’d like to know what has changed. I honestly can’t see how any planned timetable for the Windermere branch would include a break on a train at Windermere. The lack of a guaranteed toilet would preclude it in my experience...

    Connection nonsenses

I know. I am a driver who has driven the Windermere branch under their terms and conditions. I was answering the specific question regarding whether a break at Windermere would be compromised by an extended halt at Oxenholme rather than a general synopsis of breaks nationwide. And unless the...
