    Volunteering - East Lancs Railway

I’ve been a volunteer on the ELR for just a smidge over 5 years now on the diesel footplate, signalling as well as maintaining our tub. It’s a brilliant place, very welcoming and friendly. Don’t believe everything you see on social media. I would suggest coming to one of the tours and seeing for...

    Driver Experiences - Diesel

Hi, It’s not a 37 but we’re running 2 private footplate experiences this year at the ELR with our Class 50, dates are 15th June and 2nd November although June has nearly sold out with only 1 section remaining, November has a nice selection remaining. We run the 3rd path on the railway so we’re...

    153 on the M6

There’s a good chance it’s making its way to the ELR, there’s some line testing taking place next week.

When do East Lancs or Keighley Worth Valley Railway run pacers?

Incorrect. Shuttles to Heywood only tend to only happen at Halloween, Santa’s and other events as such. They’ll be travelling the full length. The 144 will be doing Bury - Rammy on Friday in the morning.

    Coal Supply/Cost Issues

That’s the reason why cost is an issue, demand is high and supply is low especially with Russia being banned from exporting to us. They supply something like 50% of coal to Europe.

    Coal Supply/Cost Issues

Exactly this. Pre-covid, coal per tonne was around £230 for us, its now hitting just over £400 mark so things are getting expensive. This “Biocoal” is £500 per tonne at the current rate. Even diesel has increased to around 90p per litre so it’s near enough doubled.

Are there too many ‘preserved’ diesels and how could they be thinned out?

Totally agree with you, there’s going to be a point in a loco’s life when you question is the money worth it, parts are slowly becoming rarer so stocking them up when another loco gets scrapped is key to keeping it running. Things can be made, but they come at a price. I’m sure other heritage...

Are there too many ‘preserved’ diesels and how could they be thinned out?

Agree with you. I maintain 50 015 and even though it’s multi coloured yellow the amount of sheer work that’s we’ve done to the actual bodywork to get it to the state that it’s in now has actually been hard work. Engine wise the tubs good but bodywork wise the rust spots were starting to show...

    Accident on NYMR, 21-9-21

I’m not sure how other railways operate but on where I volunteer that’s a strict no no. A driver needs to know the ins and outs of that class, where isolations cocks are, how to safely operate it and such things like that before you’ve even stepped foot into the drivers seat, once you’re...

    Accident on NYMR, 21-9-21

Safety digest has just been released. Quite an interesting but worrying thing to read. Neither steam crew nor track inspector were familiar with the loco yet still intended on using it...

Experience of Female Volunteers at Heritage Railways

With regards to your edit, i do believe “the third” that Joanne is speaking of is the place where the General Manager is female too. If anyone knows Joanne she’s an absolutely cracking woman, always works hard and never comes off the footplate clean.
