    The last coal train?

I went past there yesterday on the A453 and I’m used to seeing the huge coal mountain outside, there’s hardly anything left now. I will miss it as I grew up around Chilwell, Attenborough and Long Eaton, and the chimney and towers always dominated the skyline,

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

How many times have you been stuck behind people on trains where the doors are automatic but you have to press a button to open them, and they just stand there looking confused as they haven’t magically opened on their own? I’ve been stood there a fair few times, then at heritage railways the...

Why is rail travel in Cornwall so cheap ?

We normally stay near dawlish Warren in the summer for our main holiday and have been all over Devon and Cornwall by train, with a rail card it’s great it’s so cheap compared to back home and the high priced midland main line. I think we have pretty much covered all lines in south Devon from...

Thameslink driver refuses to move train 16/11

The plated number on busses is worked out based on the kerb weight and then 65kg per person (for cars we use 75kg!!) and then you can have X people per m2 iirc… but most of the time it’s that reach a theoretical GVW… ie unladen mass, plus a passenger in every seat… whatever’s left devide that by...

Santa trains - any recommendations in the midlands

It’s that time of year again….(a bit late if honest)… I thought I would ask the hive mind for recommendations as the wife is losing her mind trying to pick one. (I asked for recommendations for camping earlier in the year and had some good recommendations) Our little boy is just 14 months old...

Flooding means no alcohol on EMR

Spotted today at Nottingham station, seems EMR are blaming the storm for the Robin Hood line being dry in the evenings

    Ivanhoe Line (Leicester-Burton)

The Coalville to Derby part is still very much on the cards, it’s just the bottom bit to Leicester which was a sound bite from the speech that everyone jumped on but it was clear it hadn’t been thought through as just high level attention grabbing headlines with no actual substance… Leicester...

    Aviemore incident 29/9/23

Great Central also have an observation car, we had our wedding breakfast on it when we got married there, and the veranda was open all trip back and forth twice. The last risk assessment to it required the railings to be raised a little which you can see in the photo. It was really special being...

    Ivanhoe Line (Leicester-Burton)

A lot of people on the local FB claim that Leicester is the key as we are in Leicestershire, but to be honest we go shopping in both Leicester and Burton and Burton is better, the railway also has better connections from Burton and Derby too. NR can’t say the plan is Leicester in XYZ years etc...

    Ivanhoe Line (Leicester-Burton)

Thanks. I knew it was a fair bit of single the Leicester end as I have crossed over it various places driving etc and it’s single.

    Ivanhoe Line (Leicester-Burton)

I live near Coalville and the local FB groups are full of moaners and angry people about it not going to Leicester but none have read the info from NR etc or even bothered to think about it in detail. South of Coalville there is a lot of potential freight traffic, there is a couple of big...

What signal is this? And how did it work?

Ahhh thanks for confirming I wasn’t going mad with regards to a white light at a crossing.

What signal is this? And how did it work?

Thanks, now I know I’m on the right track I can do some more digging on the history, how they worked etc. I suspect the chance of me finding some internals is slim 1693088654 I did suspect there was something missing. I’m sure I have seen something similar that was a white light at some level...

What signal is this? And how did it work?

I recently acquired this signal but I am unsure what sort it is? Is it a search light multi colour one? I thought they were a LNER thing? This seems to be BR Western region? It’s wired up with a 6v bulb but I’m not sure if this is original? Anyone know anything about it or where I can read more...

Heritage railways and camp sites within walking distance?

We have just had a great 3 nights at Station Campsite in Carrog near Llangollen railway, the site was really good, and the railway the other side of the hedge was great. Shame Carrog station is now a shadow of its former self, no cafe, not manned most of the time real shame.
