    Query Regarding Train Wifi

I hope this isn't too OT but I was wondering if anyone could tell me how WiFi is actually provided on the trains. (Does it vary?) Are there access points running track side along the route, or is it satellite internet on the train? (and then just access points in the carriages to distribute...

ROSCOs - How do train orders work in practice?

If the deals are as profitable as people say then I don't understand how there can also be no competition. I know that for instance when we are bidding on an SLB transaction we will make a bid for the leasing costs and we are usually going against other pension funds or annuity providers and...

ROSCOs - How do train orders work in practice?

Thanks all for the feedback, I work for an annuity provider and I was interested in how the train deals compare to property leasing deals that we are increasingly using to back our annuity portfolio. It always struck me that if we were assuming a 20-30 year life of a train, even with zero...

ROSCOs - How do train orders work in practice?

I was wondering how ROSCO financing works in detail, specifically. What guarantees are there in a train order? If as a ROSCO you end up with duds like a Class 180 or Class 460 is the government meeting the finance costs when there aren't any TOCs that want the units? I've seen something about...

    "Seek Assistance" everywhere I go!

I have resigned myself to the fact that I can basically never get through a barrier with a ticket bought with a 16-25 railcard anymore. In fact if work are paying for my ticket (which is the case for most of my train travel these days) I don't bother buying a railcard ticket at all such is the...

Who do you think should win the upcoming Thameslink franchise?

I'm not sure it matters too much who wins. I want to see Govia running the whole lot really but I was under the (perhaps incorrect) impression that this was a relatively short franchise to oversee the Thameslink Programme completion / Franchise Merger and then once all that was finished there...

London Victoria (VIC) - Gatwick Airport (GTW) in 1st on a Std ticket

I'm not always the TOCs biggest fan but I really don't see what is particularly unfair about the penalty fare process. The majority of the time its only the guard and they will just sell a ticket, on the rare occasions that there's an RPI inspection you get a penalty fare with no discretion...

London Victoria (VIC) - Gatwick Airport (GTW) in 1st on a Std ticket

I think what you say is perfectly true. The irony is that the mods etc wouldn't add that much on to the policy, but because they just assume that 'it doesn't matter' or whatever, for the sake of saving £50 a year they invalidate their insurance.

London Victoria (VIC) - Gatwick Airport (GTW) in 1st on a Std ticket

I would think it was perfectly fine for either of the two companies to do just that, provided there were signs all over the stores/restaurants as there are over the stations / trains in penalty fare areas stating "Please note, leaving this restaurant without clearing your table may attract a £20...

London Victoria (VIC) - Gatwick Airport (GTW) in 1st on a Std ticket

Yes the driver does not have valid insurance and no claim should be paid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uberrima_fides As far as I can tell someone being a 'jobsworth' sounds an awful lot like, 'someone doing their job' In this case I don't understand why the penalty fare wasn't just paid. At...

    Adult on child ticket.

I bought a YP railcard as soon as I turned 16. Even back then people were very suspicious of child tickets. Before I turned 16 I would regularly be challenged when travelling on, or buying a child ticket, despite being small for my age. Although I completely understand the reasons for them...

Stations with surprisingly high passenger use

Barnham? Obviously because its used as a parkway for surrounding area and changing trains between Bognor (and Littlehampton if you want to use Arun Valley as most Lhampton-London trains go via Hove I think) but the vital stats are according to Wikipedia 1,372 (4,479 including West Barnham)...

    Railcards

I was wondering on a similar topic what the programming was on the barriers for Y-P (or other discounted tickets.) It seems almost random whether the barrier rejects my ticket. I travelled to London twice on a YP ticket last week and I was stopped by the barrier at Chichester on the way one...

    Thameslink, once complete...

I'm not very well informed about this (and I suppose its all still TBC anyway), but do the Peterborough to Horsham services replace the current slow Horsham - London Bridge service? I assume passengers from Horsham (and stations further south), Crawley and Three Bridges will still be better off...
