Conductor wouldn't sell me a railcard reduced fare onboard even though the ticket machine has been "vandalised"

Hygiene issues aside, if the machine had gunk on the screen, it will almost certainly mess with the touchscreen and thus not register presses in the right place and not be able to vend the ticket. Therefore I don’t see how it could be an opportunity to purchase.

Why is Harrow-on-Hill to Stoke Mandeville cheaper than to Aylesbury?

Chiltern's website will sell a ticket for Stoke Mandeville to Harrow on the Hill via Aylesbury if you add Aylesbury as a via point. In terms of the Routeing guide, this is a local journey as Aylesbury is the common routing point. The Routeing Guide in Detail (section F) says at the top of page...

Changing to tfl at East Croydon

As others have said, you have to step back a train. You won’t lose much time as there’s so many trains going from East Croydon to London Bridge (not just those from Brighton but also from Horsham, Caterham, East Grinstead, Gatwick, Uckfield, etc which are all 1 or 2 stops). You will however lose...

    Uber ticketing

I used the Uber app for the first time today. At the very end it said there had been an error and the transaction had failed. I was in the middle of trying again and noticed that an email arrived with the confirmation and collection code of the original attempt. There's also a pre-auth on my...

    Barcode tickets and cross-London splits

Perhaps they were confused because barcode tickets not being accepted by the tube and one of your tickets being a barcode one (despite it not being the one you used on the tube). Your tickets sound perfectly valid to mep

"Be prepared to vacate the seat or purchase a first class ticket"

The announcement doesn't explicitly say you won't get a PF, but it very heavily implies you can just sit in First Class and if a member of staff comes round, you can pay on board to upgrade on board, similar to LNER's Weekend First upgrades. They should change this announcement to clarify the...

    Supermarkets discussion

A new Tesco Express has recently opened near me. They take shoplifting so seriously it’s getting silly. First, it’s a small shop but has two security guards on duty all the time, each with a bright yellow body camera. Second, they have deactivated the outdoor sensor that opens the doors. To get...

    TrainSplit beta site

My number one wish is to be able to select fixed time outbound but wanting some flexibility on the return. I have to do multiple searches to do this manually at the moment. As you say, this has always been clunky. I prefer how some competitors do it where they Ajax load more options and extend...

    London Overground line names announced

I do not like the new names. The lines already had names which TfL just needed to publicise more. Instead they’ve turned the naming into a political event. The network is most easily to navigate when you can instinctively work out where a line goes based on its name, especially at busy stations...

How many minutes to refund ticket at booking office?

[Re LNER online refunds]: I might be wrong because I was in a bit of a hurry, but as far as I recall the website didn't ask me to post it back, only to upload a picture of it cut in half, which I did. I still have the cut up tickets though. I can't find any way to track the progress of the...

How many minutes to refund ticket at booking office?

I got a refund at a Southern station fairly recently. They didn’t quibble it but it took over 15 minutes whilst the member of staff filled in numerous paper forms and made me sign the paperwork. They did refund my card there and then though. Edit: it was a ticket purchased at the same station...

Online petition calls for Leap Year Day to move to June: could it work?

Are you suggesting a timezone that is a whole 24 hours offset from UTC? That’d be… interesting.

Online petition calls for Leap Year Day to move to June: could it work?

I’m a member of the timezone co-ordination team at my work (not a joke). Leap seconds in general cause us a load of pain*, as do timezone changes that some countries have done with very little notice. The normal software update cycle in large organisations means it takes weeks for things to...

TfL considers Taylor Swift-style 'dynamic pricing' for Tube journeys

What’s to stop me or any other hybrid worker just changing my office days to add Friday and drop another day instead?

    LNER launching a mascot

This week I saw an advert with the mascot on the side of a bus stop in London. I wonder where else they're advertising
