    June 2024 Timetable Change

From my experience the 19:18 as it is now it’s as bad as you describe however the 16:18 is as it is one of the few Swansea services booked as 5 coaches (as opposed to always being short formed of which there are many…)

    June 2024 Timetable Change

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but GWR are running two London to Swansea services non stop from Paddington to Bristol Parkway. The services being the 16:18 and 19:18 departures from Paddington. Two additional services will run from Paddington to Bristol Parkway to make up for the lost calls at...

    June 2024 Timetable Change

I agree which begs the question why are Basingstoke and Winchester involved in this “trial”. Im not familiar with the situation in the North, but from experience most trains leaving Reading towards Bournemouth are not full except a few in the peaks. Skipping Basingstoke would of course make it...

    June 2024 Timetable Change

Will this not just be the case of having say Winchester as Pick Up only northbound to prevent local journeys from Southampton/Bournemouth causing overcrowding. Similarly Basingstoke could be Set Down only in the southbound direction to stop local journeys to Winchester/Southampton.

    One-off direct Gatwick-Basingstoke train?

Usually happens when the North Downs from Reading is shut. (in this case on Sunday between Reading and North Camp) I assume it’s just like a set swap between the routes which happens a lot just never by running it as a through service like this.

    South Wales 'Metro' updates

The Cardiff bay branch really cuts the area in half by running inbetween Bute St and Lloyd George Avenue. Given the proposal is for tram trains, why was the opportunity not taken to lower the branch to street level, (until it has to head upwards of course) thus vastly improving the surrounding...

Trains skipping stations when they are less than 5 minutes late

True, however on a journey that is 1 hour 20 minutes end to end and runs every half an hour, a 9 minute delay should be able to be accommodated. Try justifying skip-stopping when 9 minutes late to a customer.

Trains skipping stations when they are less than 5 minutes late

If a service isn’t resilient enough to deal with a 9 minute delay then clearly the timetable/diagrams need to be changed to better deal with this. 9 minutes is hardly an abnormal amount of delay.

    Landslip in Sonning Cutting

This happened as the unit control wanted to form 1C22 was on platform 11 where trains cannot go back towards Didcot. The original plan was for the train to go down to Reading West and change ends there but the guard didn’t sign the route. Hence it went via Kennet loop with passengers on board...

    GWR Class 165/166 Turbo Diagrams

So if the North Downs wasn’t shut there would have been quite a few more short forms this week!

    June 2024 Timetable Change

I don’t doubt that is part of the reason why it is so busy and having an 11.37 would be most welcome. However surely part of the reason it is so busy is it’s the first Super off peak direct to Penzance and this is supposed to be changing soon so the 10:03 is Super off peak too( although an email...

    June 2024 Timetable Change

A welcome decision however, the reason this train is so busy is that it’s the first “Super off peak” direct service to Penzance. But a change to fares restrictions that was supposed to start Monday means the 10:03 from Paddington to Penzance (1C80) will become Super off peak. Meaning this...

Is the section of gwml beteen Paddington and reading the worst maintained line in the country?

It would have been the train manager. IET’s cannot run with out one unless there is a platform dispatcher at all the stations it calls at. Hence the need for one when stopping at Tilehurst, Pangbourne etc. as these do not have dispatchers.

SWR 455s on the Hounslow loop

Yes, the 21:20 from Waterloo to Reading is booked as a 455. Then forms the 23:09 back to London Waterloo from Reading. Which is the last London Waterloo services from Reading.

GWR IET’s Lots of 5 Car Sets PAD > South Wales

There was a previous thread regarding the issue of GWR short forms but I believe it has been locked. Unfortunatley 5 car short forms are becoming common place. And that’s on top of the services to Swansea that are booked as 5 cars.
