On the ECML in County Durham the Aycliffe 'wobble' could be abandoned for a straight alignment from Darlington to just south of Ferryhill. Maybe that curve eased too. For years it seems the speeds have been maximised around the Aycliffe. Think it's 85mph on the southern bit?
There's just no...
I'm really surprised that there isn't more of an uproar about this. Two decently sized towns and a few villages have no public transport (Washington too). A lot of us are stranded, hospital appointments cancelled etc. Why hasn't a contingency been in operation by Durham County Council...
Also starting trains on the up line in those steam days were usually pushed over the viaduct by a banker and they had to return through to North Durham to wait for the next push up the hill to Neville's Cross/Crossgate Moor, so I'm guessing they would have to be signalled individually as well
Definitely take the x21 from Durham to Gateshead. Sit upstairs on the left as when you're on the A1 near the Angel the view on the left across the Team Valley and up to the hills is rather good. You really don't want to get on a regular 21. Mainly every stop through Birtley and Low Fell is a...
Yes the chip shop scene is complete hoot!
There's a couple of youtube uploads of the complete film but this is the best channel as it has loads of Play For Today episodes/films and is always being updated -

I don't live anywhere near a railway now but I can see the trackbed of the Stanhope and Tyne line from the front windows.
With cheap binoculars I could see the trains on Croxdale viaduct on the ECML when I lived near Durham.
When I was about 4 years old the Durham Coast Line was between the back...
Travelled south over the Leamside line on Sunday March 27th, 1988. We were on an HST from Newcastle to Bristol. It took ages to reach Tursdale/Ferryhill when we re-joined the ECML.
Is that entrance still used or even still there? It used to lead to the ticket office direct from Eldon Square.
The other side of the ticket hall leads, or used to lead directly into a clothes shop. The bra department. Handy if you needed some support after your metro trip....
Durham while waiting on the south platform. Headlights from the Newton Hall curve then the line sounds but what seems like 5 minutes later the train eventually enters the station. Even the non stoppers that slow down for the viaduct curve then power UP....they all seem to take AGES from that...
I'm really surprised about this Tyneside/London conversation about dodgy kids. Thought it would've been more Manchester/London.
My experiences of both the Metro and various London transports is they're just kids, and a lot of them. Used to call the radgy kids charvers, with an R! Anti-social...
And that's the factor. Global Village, if that's still a phrase. And various bits of materials will be shipped from halfway round the world probably.
Economics are daft.
Meanwhile in Middlesbrough an ex-puddler will be deliverooing.
My gran bought me my first book about railways. British Railways Past and Present No.4 The North East when it was published. Since then, especially over the past decade I've tried to collect as many books about 'round here' as possible. Here's my favourites -
