I’m no expert but I would say that the owner of the contactless card is irrelevant the first person to use the card has not done anything wrong and it’s the OP’s partner’s mother who uses her card to enter that has committed the offence, if I have understood the facts...

    As the person concerned was commuting to work had they purchased an anytime day return priced at £13.60 this would have been reduced to £8.95 with their railcard And could be used before 10.00 am

    Whilst travelling via West Hampstead may have avoided zone 1 Rickmansworth to Marylebone is preferable due to the slow Met trains. Interestingly ticket failed to open gateline at Victoria and Brighton

    Had this issue at Cardiff Central with an e-ticket not opening gate although I think i may have been told I could only enter 30 minutes prior to departure time, however when I requested access to First Class lounge I was allowed through.

    GTR Ticket Card

    I had no issue using a GWR Smartcard in TFL / Chiltern land. Loaded a Rickmansworth to Aylesbury Vale Parkway off peak day return. On return was dropped off at Amersham and had no problem at gate line.
