i think it was a open ticket and he was booked on another train we were lucky as there was the only two seats left and if there was no seats left i would of kicked up more of a fuss!
also first great western say that advance ticket holders should only sit in your allocated seats and i do...
just to add my view of some people sitting in reserved seating!

if you go via london you will find it is cheaper!
ie Ply to London zone 1=£32.75 advance single (18-25 railcard)
Euston to Glasgow Central =£59.75 advance single (18-25 railcard)
total=£92.50
and with that you can use the first clas lounges at Euston and Paddington stn's
