    Platform Nine and Three-Quarters

The Harry Potter books were very badly written. It's bad enough when books for adults are badly written, but we need to teach children how to write properly. Getting them to read badly written books is not the best way to do that. It does seem that badly written books sell well. Dan...

Train travel for the over 60s...

Also £19 anywhere on Scotrail and I believe also on First Great Western, but only at certain non-busy times of the year. In other words, forget the school holidays and Christmas.

    Beeches Light Railway.

Always fancied a garden railway ... perhaps not on this scale, though! Thanks for sharing.

    Gatwick Express services

On the contrary, they get a lot of passengers to and from Haywards Heath and Brighton and these stations are well served by Thameslink and Southern services that also stop at Gatwick.

    Best TOC

Virgin Trains for me because they are the best InterCity franchise by miles. The trains are fast, clean and comfortable and they offer Advance tickets at unbelievably low prices, especially in First Class.

    Hythe Pier Railway.

Excellent set of images, thank you for posting. I have never visited Hythe Pier but at least I know what to expect when I do.

Base board for 00 gauge layout

    West German Narrow Gauge.

Thanks for posting the link to these images. Those of loco 99 193 and the converter bogies carrying a standard gauge hopper wagon were particularly interesting. Is there any narrow gauge left in the former West Germany in 2012?

Some more Swiss pictures from 1984.

    Favourite Railway Journey

The Glacier Express in Switzerland. It was on a family skiing trip, and I don't ski so I got to take some great train trips instead. The Glacier Express was particularly impressive in the deep winter snow. I am glad I went on it when I did, as I couldn't afford to make the trip now.

    Train design - what next?

I think you meant "someone will invent a new standard coupler that won't work with any of the types we have already."

German Steam - colour pictures from 1965.

    Interesting pictures. Thanks for sharing.

    Sat Navs

The chore and cost of updating maps are the biggest downfall. It's probably easier and cheaper to buy a new satnav every couple of years, such is the cost of updating the maps. I bought a cheap but adequate Mio in Morrisons a couple of years ago for £39.99 (down from £79.99) and loaded new...
