    June 2024 Timetable Change

On GA, the 17:30 ex LST is going to be carnage from June, with the 17:00 having the MNG call removed (also neatly severing the fast Harwich option), the 17:30 retaining the COL call and the 17:50 retimed to depart LST at 18:00. 17:30 is currently full and standing at LST by 17:20 and full to...

    Class 745 Stadler FLIRTs

Seems to have zero TINs after 2 weeks, so that gives the Class 745 fleet an industry leading MTIN of ∞ ;) That should jinx it.

Norwich to London timetabling and performance

Thanks, I'll update my mental notes! I think a signaller told me it wasn't possible, or perhaps I misunderstood.

Norwich to London timetabling and performance

I might be wrong on this, not been to Liverpool Street IECC in a long while and every ARS installation is a little bit different. I concur that signaller and controller workload is easy to underestimate for those who haven't spent time in control environments, even when things are running smoothly.

Norwich to London timetabling and performance

...is the correct answer. ARS (Automatic Route Setting) can make a regulating decision at a converging location, but once two trains are following one another it will not intervene, and cannot intervene because Mk I ARS can't deviate from a train's booked platform. The signaller can override...

More Level Crossing Lunacy ! Manningtree and Colchester

Presumably that's permitted because the top deck is actually at about railway ground level, and the lower deck is sunk and so the whole thing is invisible from a distance. I expect £10 million might be on the low side, but if I were the Sponsor I'd be looking a building a case based on...

More Level Crossing Lunacy ! Manningtree and Colchester

Any solution would have to avoid impacting the AONB, so that probably precludes any sort of bridge, as this would be visible from Flatford. I believe this is the same reason a larger multi-story car park cannot be provided nor can the land to the north of the station be developed. In my view...

    Timetabling Braking Performance

RWA was a few years ago now! But yes, that's me. Still dabbling in said dark arts, and have some new toys to play with now.

    Timetabling Braking Performance

These are indeed the defaults to be used if more accurate data is not provided (e.g. by TOCs). Recent studies have shown that actual observed braking rates are typically in the range 2%g to 6%g, so approximately 0.2 m/s² to 0.6 m/s², and this has been noted for more recent studies. This has...

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

As explained above, under the TSR there cannot be any reduction in service frequencies at Manningtree, Chelmsford or Stratford, which is implied by your proposal. TSR3 gets around this by introducing a fourth stopping path as far as Ipswich and extending one stopper to Norwich.

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

That seems to be the service defined by TSR3, which was originally planned for May 2020. Using the same off-peak period, 17 trains from Norwich, 24 from Ipswich, 19 Manningtree, 31 Colchester, 31 Chelmsford so that would imply that 1 of the 4 tph from Ipswich would stop only at Colchester...

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Yup that's correct, but the service frequencies to/from London at Chelmsford and Manningtree must remain pretty much as now, so the calling pattern of the InterCity services south of Ipswich can't change. Extending every Ipswich service to Norwich is not totally straightforward because of...

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

I'm not sure the TSR2 in the link above permits this, as it requires 31 stops at Chelmsford and 31 stops at Colchester (Table 2 off-peak) for example. So that's all except the 6 fast Norwich services, 1 per hour, with the Braintree services making up the difference. TSR3 appears to suggest an...

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

That's what the extension of the Ipswich service delivers, with the added benefit of no change being required at Ipswich but the dis-benefit of some performance risk. A separate stopping service with an extension to Colchester would require more movements over the problematic level crossings at...

Recommend me a good London pub right by the Thames!

Seconded. Also the Cutty Sark as mentioned above, and there's another couple in Greenwich too. There's a few along the river in Wapping and Limehouse, of which The Grapes on Narrow Street would be my pick. Also the Mayflower in Bermondsey and the Gun on Coldharbour/Blackwall.
