    Formula 1

I think this is a pretty solid guess. Albon would be my guess/choice too. He's recovered well from the Red Bull hazing that he had. I think there's also some talent across the pond that might invade too. Pato O'Ward and Colton Herta are very fast. O'Ward was within a tenth or two of Lando in the...

    Class 91 Locomotive Questions.

They were also a single point failure on wheels. So many of the critical systems and components were effectively in series, like the aux proved circuit. Any one thing went down and the whole loco, and thus train, was dead in the water. 14 was fitted with a duplex pantograph for a while in an...

    Pantograph Mechanism

Pantographs are operated from the main air reservoir and system, charged by the main compressor(s). The auxiliary compressor is a small battery powered unit designed to raise the pan when the rest of the train/loco is dead. The raise command can be given by any input (usually driver in cab)...

IEP - Why fit low powered diesel engines?

It's not just "spending a few bucks" to uprate the engines. Yes they're the same physical GU assemblies as a non IEP AT300, however the maintenance plan is designed around the engines having an output of 565kW for a given number of hours' operation (based on known diagrams etc.). If the power is...

    Class 373 Eurostar withdrawals

They were only limited in the early phase of the project. They were eventually cleared to run at 125 from Woolmer Green to Grantham.

    International Train Driver - Eurostar

On a normal day, when everything goes to plan, it can be thought of as dull. The line is very samey for much of the northern France route. Brussels turns are a bit more interesting. But countering that, I have two points. 1. There are plenty of days that aren't "normal" where you have to...

OLE problem on ECML tonight (20/08/15)

The loco involved was 91114. The one fitted with the double pantograph.

    Express Sprinters and 90mph running

It is more reliable than many think. I have had cause to calibrate GPS to wheelspeed sensors for data acquisition purposes and despite the obvious drop outs that are inevitable, it is surprisingly accurate. It all depends on what chipset is being used as much as anything. You wouldn't use it...

    Express Sprinters and 90mph running

I shall put you out of your misery: It is a GPS trace, not data recorder. Data output to .csv and plotted in excel. I am not 'fitter' though. I am a chartered railway engineer. I work on TGV rolling stock in a combination of investigations, reliability optimisation and maintenance...

    High Speed Two (HS2) discussion

Using only friction brakes would not necessarily be a limiting factor in minimum braking distance performance. It may be that even if you had dynamic braking on top of that (excluding eddy current devices) that the distance wouldn't be reduced any further. If the friction brakes are capable of...

Mimimum curve radius on section 1 of HS1?

Your googling is inaccurate I'm afraid. Minimum horizontal radius for both sections of HS1 is 2300m. Cant deficiency for 300km/h at that radius is 160mm. Max speed on section 2 is 230km/h, not 270. Hope that helps.

I can assure you that was never going to happen.

IEP: 26 metres is too long

Aren't the vehicles themselves only planned to be 25m long anyway?
