I am looking at booking on the 1849 off Edinburgh on a Friday evening. What sort of food would I expect in first class? The timetable simply says hot snacks but what does this entail?
Looking at the original pictures the train was on the other line which has no water tower and locos are required to be filled using the pressure fillers and a road tanker. The train normally would draw up to the starter and pipes laid from the tanker to the loco. From the photos it looks like...
As far as I know it isn't really used apart from railtours if they stop in Penrith or during times of disruption. Only 3 services are on the WTT for a Monday (Just picked a day at random) all of which are freight probably being overtaken.
I have heard that you can get a regulator unit which over fields the dynamo so that you get full output at a much lower speed than normal making them more suited to heritage operations.
No idea how much one costs mind.
Some older butterfly fitted units have steps on the ends to climb up to the valve as well, if they haven't rusted to the point of not being able to take weight that is!
I'd say that it would just be a straight run round the train assuming that they were using extension air pipes instead of that coach to get to the high level pipes and the coach was only being used for brake force...

IIRC the traction motors aren't axle hung so as to reduce the unsprung mass. They instead are mounted on the bogie frame so need prop shafts to connect to the axles.
