Current - SWT's livery on the Class 158 & 159's look the business particurlarly with the large SWT wording to the either side of the drivers cabs.
Historic - I also like Regional Railways schemes it basically worked on everything my personal favourite were the class 31/4 Locos adorned. The PTE Variations were good particularly the Metro WYPTE scheme. Network Southeast again worked well on most things, I was not so keen on the very early lighter shade of blue with sharp swooshes. The Route brandings such as Solent & Wessex gave an positive identidy to the units & locos

EMT on a HST (but only on the HSTs, not on their plastic or toy trains!)

LT red on the Isle of Wight is a current livery. It happens to be a favorite of mine.

I really like London Midland's (and to some extent Southern's) livery, its simple and modern.

In my opinion the only two post-privatisation liveries that don't make my eyes hurt are GNER and the old FGW Green and Gold.

Grand Central, but only on the 180s- neither varient on the HST has been that elegant.

SouthWest Trains and East Midland Trains (pretty much the same) are good- barring the 458, it forms a coherent, service-based colour coding and all three colours are vibrant without being eye-melting.

London Transport- now in Underground, Overground and Tramlink varieties, though it would be better if Overground was allowed to use Orange for the ends. I was surprised when the latest DLR units didn't sport a varient of this livery.

First Hull Trains version of the First-group "Dynamic lines" looks very smart.

Best:
  • Midland Mainline - Dark green, white coaching stock very nice, not to bold but stands out.
  • BR Swallow - Although very dated. I wonder what it would look like in modern design?
  • First Neon - The plain engines with the "electric" coaching stock look good.
  • GNER - Although now looking to be dated against others. GNER on the Eurostar looked very smart indeed.
  • Regional Railways (Express) - As seen on the 158's. Again looks dated against other liveries now, but would be nice to see what modern designers could evolve it to.

Owen Hodgson's take on that, first one is pretty good, the second is horrid.

The best post-privatisation livery has got to the Great Western Trains green and ivory "Merlin" livery http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/gb/diesel/HST/GW/GW_green-white/43023gw.jpg

Other good ones are Southern's two-tone green, First ScotRail's "Saltire", and the ex-London Transport red and cream used on the Isle of Wight. I quite liked Wessex Trains' maroon and silver Alphaline and Virgin's red and black inherited stock liveries. DRS is a nice classy livery too.

The worst ones are pretty much all First Great Western. The green and gold "fag packet" is bottom of the heap, closely followed by "dynamic lines" and "gazetteer", "Barbie" is only slightly better. Transpennine Express's rebranding of Northern spirit was another poor one.

While not bad, Chiltern, National Express East Coast and Wrexham & Shropshire just seem dull and uninspired.

Merseyrail's silver and yellow isn't bad for a metro service but it would be too garish for long distance where comfort is more important than speed and capacity.

I'm also a fan of the former GNER livery, though agree with others that it now looks a little dated.

Of the current liveries, the whole brand image of Southern is fantastic. I think the train livery sits well on the fleet, even the elderly 313s look comparatively youthful. The stations also look fantastic, with good signage and colour schemes - it's something different, with traditional and modern hand in hand - very much like the rail network in general, really.

Grand Central for me, distinctive and classy with very much it's own quite retro vibe. Nothing else like it.

The current FGW hst livery is for me the best. Makes the old HST units look modern and smart. Have heard many comments about the trains looking nice and new, when we all know this isnt the case!

My all time favourite was 'one' rainbow until NX ruined it by taking away the lovely stripes. Greater Anglia's new red & white colour scheme on 153306 isn't bad.
NX corporate livery is appallingly dull, and Wales & West silver and FGE blue/green look very dated these days.
Green & Blue Northern Spirit was lovely, it was a shame to see it go.

I think the following are my favorite:

1) Grand Central a very simple and elegant livery. The colours really suit the vehciles they are applied to

2) EMT HST livery

3) I like the Virgin livery on the Pendos - but it woudl be much better without that bloody great Virgin logo!

4) DRS - it seems to suit all of the locos it has been applied to

Past:

1) Load Haul - Genius!
2) Intercity
3) Large Logo
4) Triple Gray Railfrieght
5) Railfreight red stripe

Silverlink, very soon to be extinct though

Silverlink livery will live on. There is an 08 in silverlink colours at Norwich Crown Point that GA don't have the money/time/will/interest to repaint in their new colours.

I actually think FGW 'Dynamic Lines' is one of the most attractive HST liveries there's been and looks good on 180s too; the Stagecoach colours just don't look right on an HST power-car in my opinion, but looks OK on units. Was never a fan of Nat Exp on anything.

I'd say the gold and green FGW HST livery was the best past livery, either that or GNER's 91s. The best modern livery is a toss-up between First's Dynamic Lines (TPX, FGW, maybe HT?) or maybe the new SR "Saltire" livery.
