RVP had his first united hattrick, as well as a missed penalty. He must have a strong back, carried arsenal last year, united this year. Southampton 2 united 3. Southampton was 2-1 up with 5 mins to go.

So far (3 games) - maybe in terms of goals, although Kagawa also played well against Fulham. Also bear in mind that he only came off the bench against Everton and didn't have that much of an impact. I'll admit today he was the best United player on the pitch, but 'carrying' United is a bit of an over-statement at this stage.

The fact of the matter is that we were poor at defending aerial threats. Rafael isn't the worlds tallest player, and Lambert a good header of the ball - 1-0 down, fair enough. Their second however was poor defending by Evra, who had no idea where Schneiderlin was, lost track of him, and as a result lost his footing and slipped.

We were well below par today - Welbeck did nothing for the whole game, Cleverley looked off pace, I am still unconvinced by Rafael at the back, and Evra isn't the player he was 2 or 3 seasons ago.

RVP and Kagawa were the only united players who didnt play poor, defending was very poor.

Early stages, early stages. I wouldn't read too much into anything just yet. I'd still have questions about David Luiz's defensive abilities, whilst John Terry isn't as formidable and sharp as he once was.

I still can't quite believe that Liverpool have left themselves in a situation that they have to go to January with just 2 recognised strikers!

Still two more recognised strikers than we had at the end of last season. Still, I wonder what odds are one or both will be injured

I know I should be cheesed off that Man Utd managed to win in the nick of time but with RVP as my fantasy captain I'm not XD

As I said on Thursday, who needs Naismith when you have Lee McCulloch? Two from him and new kid in town David Templeton helped us towards a 5-1 win against Elgin today. Now up to third...

Same as Scunthorpe United then, except 1 of our strikers was playing in the BSN until January!

I cheekily tweeted Michael Owen the other day suggesting that he could get first team football at Scunthorpe, but surprisingly, no reply

Which Ashley didn't seem to realise; or he was keeping his cash to himself. And now it's too late .
Unless Simpson's injury is just a strain (although he looked in considerable pain, so perhaps not) we're left with a choice between and left-footed central midfielder, a winger and an inexperienced young full-back who was in the reserves until recently.
Since the start of the season our play has been slow and unimaginative. We've just about gotten away with it thus far, but we need to wake up.

Exactly, we are lacking in both attacking and defensive options, we've 2 attackers and 1 injured, we've ample midfielders (this is ironically the only position strengthened during the transfer window) and around 3 defenders with an additional 2 injured.

I dont think Brendan Rodgers can believe it neither based on his press conference after the gane, apparently the owners told him he would get 2 new strikers to replace Andy carroll going on loan.
Just got to look at the free agents now to find those 2 strikers, Micheal Owen springs to mind, think he'd be welcomed back and he could still score when he played for united, think he had almost a goal a game for united!

I still find it slightly strange that Owen hasn't got a club yet, that he hasn't moved to someone like Stoke or Sunderland.

It was a shame that his injuries and the emergence of Welbeck & Hernandez made his time at United a very stop-start one, but he never forgot where the goal was ;)

I think he's been holding out for a better offer, he's been tweeting about having many offers just none that he seemed suitable for himself.

I think you have hit on the main reason why clubs will not want to buy him. He will be after big wages, but is very injury prone, as Newcastle found out.

After this afternoon, I starting to lose my patience with Alan Knill. Another crap display saw us lose 2-0, this time against Hartlepool. That's now played 6, drawn 1* and lost 5, with 6 goals scored and 18 against. Simply put, not good enough. Also, Knill was only able to name 6 subs out of the 7 possible.

Also, despite having good contacts at higher level clubs, he hasn't done much in the transfer market to excite fans. The squad is as bare as I've seen it in a long time, topped of by the fact we only have 2 recognised strikers at the club, following Grant's transfer yesterday. At the end of last season, he released Jordan Robertson, who did look like a good striker at this level. Grant, who wasn't the best, was still a useful player to have around. That leaves Mike Grella and Connor Jennings up front, seeing as Matt Godden has gone on loan to Gainsborough (again).

Every Scunthorpe fan that I know accepted that last season would be a transitional season, and the teams performances in the final 10-15 games were getting better, even if we were still drawing games. This season, we have had 1 and a half decent performances. The second half against Derby and the match against Norwich. In the league however ....

The next 4 weeks will be crucial for the club. We have 5 league games. If we lose 4, then we may as well plan for relegation to League 2 at the end of the season....

Mike Grella! At Leeds he promised much and delivered little. At point he had scored something like 12 goals in 4 games in the reserves.

David, you certainly have raised the profile of Scunthorpe United since this new season commenced..:D:D
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
He's so wealthy a multi-millionaire into horses etc , has he lost the motivation ?

Why should he even bother to turn out and be "clattered" by tackles at his age, when a far more gentrified life is already beckoning him, for which he has all the assets, financial and otherwise.

Mick Channon seemed to have no regret when horseracing offered a totally new sporting direction for him to follow in life.

'Good morning, West Ham United'
'Hello, can I speak to Andy please? It's Brendan...'

What is going on at Liverpool?! Trying to copy Aston Villa in the art of how to run a club into the ground?

Conference Premiership

Hyde 5...Hereford United 2

Hyde recorded their best performance to date at this new level for them, which was noteable in that Hereford United were in League 2 last season and Hyde were in Conference North.

***************************************************

Congratulations to Fleetwood Town who had a League 2 Lancashire "seaside" derby match away to Morecambe and they recorded a 4-0 win to take them to a top-6 position. Ten ponts from their first five league matches has been a good start to the season for them.

At the rate Scunthorpe Utd are going, we'll be playing Hyde next season in League 2, and Scunny will lose!

Not impressed with this afternoon's efforts. Just passing the ball around while probing for an opening is fine in the Premiership and Championship, but in League 1 and below, you need players to get stuck in. You also need players to get foward quickly. Guess what didn't happen today....

Sheffield Utd were down to 9 men when they scored their equaliser, and our most creative midfielder was left on the subs bench until the 88th minute. At least we have more than 2 strikers at the club now ....

How an earth did Scunny fail to win when they were 1 up, with Sheff united down to 9 men.

Portsmouth will be going down too at this rate as we will probably have another 10 taken off, early days yet though.

Because Alan Knill has replaced League 1 and Championship level players with those from League 2 (and below) for the most part. The notable exceptions are David Mirfin, Jimmy Ryan, Christian Ribeiro and possibly Mike Grella.

At the end of last season, he released Josh Lillis (who is a better keeper than Slocombe), Cliff Byrne, Jordan Robertson, Garry Thompson, Sam Togwell, Michael O'Conner, Eddie Nolan and 3 others. All of those players would walk into the current Scunthorpe United starting XI. Infact, I think Robertson and Grella up front would be a pretty good striking partnership, as they both have different strengths.

Ok, some of those had to leave, as they wanted more money than Scunthorpe could afford, but to rip the backbone out of a team and replace them with players who before now had only played in League 2, or spent a lot of their career in non-league or playing at a low level in a different country is asking for trouble.

In any case, I think Knill will be leaving the club 1 way or another before the month is out. In the past week, he blamed the fans for Bobby Grant's transfer, and has recieved a vote of confidence

I knew you had lost some of your best players but I never realised the replacements were that bad! You're just asking to be regulated fielding a team fit for a side to stay up in league 2. If you can get a new manager he might be able to shuffle the lads and squeeze the best from them, Appleton has done wonders here.

On the bright side you've clinched your first point and it's only early days
