Can this be done:

Carlisle to Kyle of Lochalsh (or just as far as Inverness) out via Glasgow and Stirling, back by Aberdeen and/or Edinburgh and from Edinburgh to Carlisle.

Route is any permitted and break of journey allowed on the return.

My clever friend even suggests out via Glasgow and MALLAIG to Kyle (filling in the gap with ferries and buses) but I'm not sure about that.

Thanks as ever!

In addition to the shortest route by regular services (and routes up to 3 miles longer) the following mapped routes are permitted (Carlisle is a Routeing Point, and the appropriate Routeing Point for Kyle is Inverness):-

Mapped Routes :
Carlisle - Inverness:

There is a local Scottish Easement allowing tickets valid from Edinburgh to Kyle to be used via Mallaig (but obviously you'd need to pay for the bus/ferry!), it is unclear whether this applies when the origin is specifically Edinburgh or whether a ticket for a longer journey, valid via Edinburgh, is also permitted. The easement does not appear anywhere in the public domain on any official website that I am aware of.

Picking up on a recent thread rather than starting a new one...

Next week, a group of friends and I are planning a circular highland tour - Edinburgh to Kyle, onto Skye, then returning via Mallaig, Fort William and Glasgow to Edinburgh. We would do the outward leg in one, and then probably break the journey with an overnight stop in Fort William on the return.

Other than the Freedom of Scotland travelpasses, is there one ticket that allows this journey? IE If I bought an anytime return from Edinburgh to Kyle, is it valid to return via Mallaig?

I don't really understand the reference to a local Scottish easement in the previous message. Is this something that Guards turn a blind eye to, or is it vaguely official?

Officially no, apart from the ALR.

The local easement would allow an Edinburgh - Kyle ticket to be used to return from Mallaig, however this is not documented anywhere.

If I were you, I would give ScotRail a quick call and ask for their opinions on the matter.

I emailed ScotRail a while back and they said that returning via Mallaig was not valid using my ticket which, incidentally, was a return to Kyle from a station in the South East of England. If the easement did apply I reckon that the TOC(s) would soon realize that it would be to their detriment to continue with the easement on account of too many people using it ( or in their terms, abusing it) !

It's hard to find the easement, it's more of a tourist friendly allowance...

In the West Highland Line Leaflet, it just says "Return via Kyle of Lochalsh,
to join the Kyle Line, another of the Highland's great scenic railways."

From NFM 80 Scotland (the last hard copy I have in my possession):-

"Tickets issued between Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling or Falkirk and Kyle of Lochalsh may be used in one direction to travel on the 'West Highland Line' to/from Mallaig"

I'm sure this is still posted on our commercial notice board. I will confirm later on today unless I forget.
