What do you mean by rail?

In some tunnels there are solid contact strips that are fixed to the tunnel roof

There are overhead live rails on parts of the RER in Paris, particularly on Line C. Actual conductor rail, not a contact strip, and energised at 1,500v DC.

Due north, and three to the left.
It not a case of overhead live rails, but the contact wire is attached to the overhead rail. This allowes the contact wire to be replaced easly. Normaly its only used when there is limited clearence in the tunnel.

IIRC Sunderland North tunnel is the only place in the UK where such a system is used.

If you want to see it for real, it can be seen at the low level platfroms at Berlin Hbf.

I just found some pictures via Google of Paris RER Line C showing the overhead rail very clearly; unfortunately they are on an urban explorer website and show people doing things like sitting on the rails so I'm not going to post the link up directly, but if you just Google images "Paris RER overhead live rail" you'll find them easily.

What method has been stated as the preferred method for the electrification of the former Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway tunnels at Farnworth, when that part of the Lancashire triangle electrification comes to pass ?

Lowering the track to get W10 gauge as well. It may end up as conductor bar, but IIRC a bit of lowering is required anyway.

Hold on, I thought when the then unwired Haymarket tunnels between Haymarket and Edinburgh were being wired up they had to use this system?

I thought that was the case, I know when I last used First Scotrail, I was heading back from Oban on one of their Summer Sunday Specials in 2011 - how much is actually wired up now north of Haymarket not including the routes via Bathgate or Carstairs?

The line over the Forth Bridge isn't wired (so no wires from just west of Edinburgh Park).
Not sure if the Shotts line is wired

I was in Paris yesterday and I took the opportunity to look in detail at the overhead live rail on the RER Line C; it is indeed not a direct rail to pantograph contact, but neither is there a wire fixed to the underside of the rail. It seems to be a thick copper strip about 3 or 4 cm wide and 2cm deep.
