Virgin and Network Rail are investigating the idea of running Pendolinos (Which are more than capable of 140mph) to run at 135mph in parts between Rugley Trent Valley and Rugby. It will only apply to EPS Trains anyway (Pendolinos & 91s are the only trains certified to run at 140mph) because of some sections having tilt involved.
Virgin claim that because of the superior and quicker braking capability of Pendolinos that 135mph would be achievable with current lineside signalling, with a few alterations to Signalling Block Sections. VT time scale for completion (if this goes ahead) is December 2008. Perhaps Network Rail will be more 'open' and 'accepting' to the idea after Greyrigg, in a way of small compensation to VT? A theory of mine anyway....
