Diesel Engine specs.

When buying a car, people always look at the engine size and other specifications as this can dictate insurance group and fuel efficiency and other things, but it is not so widely talked about with trains. The engineer in me was curious about the engine sizes and other specs. of the diesel engines in passenger trains so I have made this list from info I remember and have found on the internet. Please add to it, and I hope you find it interesting. If anyone know anything about things I have marked with question marks then that would be great :D

Locomotives

37 - English Electric V12 ???

43 (HST) - MTU 4000 V16 or Paxman VP185 V12 ???

47 - Sulzer V12 ???

57 - 2,750hp EMD 645 126.8L V12 2-stroke turbodiesel

67 - 3,300hp EMD 710 139.6L V12 2-stroke turbodiesel

(Note: I have only included passenger trains (i.e. no 57/0s), and have not included things with non-standard engines (i.e. 57601, a very few ScotRail 170s)

It is interesting to note that despite the massively different power outputs, Classes 150/153/155/156/158*/159/175 all effectively have the same engines, Cummins N-series 14 litre engines.

(*Not counting the Perkins-engined 158s)

When you said "specs", I was hoping for more than the sort of info you can get from wikipedia. I'd be interested in this sort of thing for each one:

Engine type: Paxman Valenta 12RP200L

Have you tried the manufacturers websites where there is usually quite a lot of info on the specifications of engines which are still in production?

Harder of course for the older engines which are not manufactured anymore but a search of the internet often reveals preservationist sites with lots of info. For example if you want to know about marine Deltic engines there is an American group restoring a Vietnam War MTB/Rescue/Patrol boat which has an awful lot of info. Try under "Nasty Boats".

Does this mean that when a set is stabled at a station for long periods and they switch one power car off, that the other car is set to notch 2 to keep the lighting on in the carriages?

IIRC one is always idling higher regardless, presumably unless you switch the ETS off. I had some sort of technical doc about it somewhere, I'll attempt to dig it up. With ETS on and both engines running the back( I think ) powercar never goes below 1k RPM irrespective of where it's throttle control is.

Really, didn't know that. Always assumed they were 2-stroke like the EMD V12s in 57s/67s. Are the Perkins and MTU engines in the DMUs listed 2-stroke or 4-stroke?

4 stroke. I think I am correct in saying that the only 2-strokes are the EMD engines.

Based on the specs I've been able to find of a 10" bore by 12" stroke, I reckon its about a 185 litre displacement.

About right. The 16CSVT in the 50's is 247 litres

Its for the paxman valenta engine originally fitted in the HST power cars.
