5Z47 Ardwick - Carnforth ECS with 47854 TnT with 47500. As mentioned its 47500 (on the rear) that's derailed and caught fire.

Its on the pointwork of Ordsall Lane Junction.

Poor old 47500.

I'd like to hope that it's just the fuel tanks that have ruptured and caused the fire - and that it makes a mainline return sooner than later. At least no-ones injured and that everything, bar the 47s ok.

A video has appeared on the ITV website. The loco is at quite an angle and the fire looks pretty fierce:

Poor thing. That's certainly all wheels off.

One more duff gone, not many to go!

not necessarily. best not to speculate but what one pixelated type image gives off isn't a true indication of the damage. we shall see.

even if it is a scrapper by the end of it the bits off it will help to keep others on the rails.

.... or Greater Anglia, they both don't get great press! :p

Funny you should say that, 1P18 Liverpool St - Norwich derailed and then re-railed itself leaving Liverpool St today hence the Liverpool St PM peak is totally destroyed due to the ongoing investigations.

Photos from Manchester don't look too good, facts as to how and why will be interesting...

Must be the day for it!!

What with the "diamond" replacement problem on the line into Salford Central, this area of Salford is certainly having more than its fair share of problems at the present time..<(

Oh yeah I just thought of that, so the stuff from Manchester Victoria not calling at Salford Central won't be able to pass the scene. Priceless.

Could they run extra services through Central and stick them wrong road at Hope St as they currently do with the two stoppers that run. Granted they would have to knock a few MCV bound ones on the head, perhaps terminating at Salford Crescent.

Shows that they didnt cancel the service, though got a fairly bad delay in the Shenfield area, i assume they didnt realise what happened until after it left though.

BTP tweeted driver ok 5 mins back

Good job the compensation cap is still there, an incident like this could bankrupt a tour operator

For now. Not going to help the case especially when NR already £660,000 out of pocket because of the cap. Depends whose fault it is of course.

Well, we don't know yet what's actually caused the derailment. When the Thumper came of the rails at Windsor a couple of years ago it was found to be dodgy trackwork rather than any fault with the train.

The video of the (one) fireman wasting water (most of it wasnt even reaching the loco) just reinforces my opinion of the fire service, there looks to be at least 3 fire engines there and just the one bloke with a hose actually doing something, pathetic display.

Another loco for the scrapyard that is Carnforth yard.

Rumours of the derailment being caused by buffer-locking. Doesn't explain the fire though...

1> What actually is buffer locking?

2> Any idea of when and how the locomotive and its coaches are going to be moved, also am I right in thinking this could have a knock on affect into tomorrow mornings peak aswell

That is just conjecture.
Buffer locking will pull the coach off not the heavier loco anyway.

The fire could have been caused by the fuel tank rupturing when the loco derailed.

There are many possibilities for the derailment and fire and the truth will out in good time, I have got my own opinion as to the cause but it is just my opinion and so not relevant to this incident, I wonder how close I am though as I am normally pretty good at these! ;)

Derailment may have ruptured the fuel tank, tho having said that diesel in liquid form doesn't burn it has to be vaporised somehow
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Would expect problems for two or three days if track work is buggered. Still it's only really chat moss route that is blocked, so arriva wales will probs start warrington bank quay or newton. TPE and northern can divert into vic and stock can still get into ardwick for servicing.

Glad driver is okay, but some awful disruptions due to this. Took me an hour longer to get home than usual. Where do I stand on getting compensation? I pay 93£ a month for a pass and and to get a taxi home!

Is there anybody in the world you have respect for except train drivers?

Well it's in the log so there must be some truth to it...
