There is mention of new escalators and 16 person lifts from Princes Street to Waverley Station. Is this access now fully step free from the street to the platforms. Looking at the plans of the station on National Rail site this is not clearly shown and following the reccommended routes prescribed on the site always ends at steps.
Thank you.

There's always been step free access via the ramps up to Waverley Bridge and lifts to the footbridge across the station, however there are now lifts and escalators at the Waverley Steps exit.
I can't remember if there's a step free way to the Market Street entrance since they rebuilt it.
I doubt the Calton Road entrance will ever be step free because it's definitely not a main entrance and doesn't really take you anywhere useful.

The signage is still rather confusing while the works are ongoing but there are three step free entrances/exits from Waverley, one via the ramp, one to Market street via a lift and one via escalators to Princes Street.

Well it is if the escalators are working! There was one run out of operation when I was there last Monday.

I knew the ramps were available but they are long and steep for us "oldies" but grateful to know that the new lifts and escalators are now operational
Thank you for the replies.

Thank you for the replies.

Is there still a taxi rank within the station?

If so, you could always take a taxi to Waverley Bridge.

There's also a glass lift to Princes Street with views of the Old Town.

I'm now an infrequent user of Waverley but every time I've used the new Waverley Steps there's been at least one out of use!

What is it with Edinburgh and Transport projects!

They can't even get escalators right never mind the most expensive per mile surface Tramline in the history of the World!

There's normally at least one broken escalator every time I use Waverley Steps.
They're also painfully slow.

was there today, I concur on the slow part but all the escalators heading up the steps were working today both when I went in and came out.

Calton Road entrance has been closed for most of the last month to rebuild as step-free entrance.

There are no plans for step free access at Calton Road that I am aware of. All they are doing is refurbishing the bridge - I get a grandstand view of the works from my workplace.

Ironically the temporary access via platform 2 is step free!

Have been to Waverley on three occasions this week. The new escalators and lifts are a vast improvement. Brilliant. Thanks for all the replies.

Network Rail have confirmed plans to introduce lift access to calton road:

Rail chiefs said they were introducing the controls on black cabs as they revealed a major £130 million revamp of the station would be completed by December – six months
earlier than planned.

A canopy being built over platforms eight and nine, near Market Street, is set to be finished by July, with scaffolding to be removed across the
station by the end of the year.

New lifts are also being created at mezzanine level opposite Waverley Steps to give wheelchair users full access to the main concourse. A separate lift giving direct access to
Calton Road will be built by the end of the year.

The Waverley overhaul started in 2009 was originally due to be finished in June next year.
