I am trying to find the best fare/travel time combination for my daughter, who wishes to go to London, either in the early evening of Friday 5th April or early morning on Saturday the 6th. She wants to return early afternoon of Sunday 7th April. The best I can find is £68 (2 x £34 singles)

Is she willing to take the somewhat slower London Midland train from Stoke to Euston?

So about an hour longer. She might go for that if its significantly cheaper, I can see a possibility of macc to stoke return for £13.20, and stoke-euston 1st class return for £40 at around the times she is interested.

£53.20 instead of £68. Hmmmm. What's London Midland 1st class offering like?

Looks like she could go from Chinley (handier than Macc for her) to St Pancake for £52 , and the outward time is similar to using LM from Stoke.

Is that in 1st or standard? For £52, its better going via Sheffield and down than the MML than paying the same for a trip on a 350 or Pendolino. Meridians are a comfy enough train and I prefer them to Pendos or 350s!

I've done Chinley to St Pancras in 1st and its a very good offering, at least in the week. I don't think you get as much in the way of complimentaries at the weekend.

I got another decent deal with a railcard going to/from London in 1st from Chinley for £35 with a railcard. Bit of a strange one changing from a pacer to a Meridian it must be said!

From Chinley I always compare Chinley - St Pancras with Chinley - Kings Cross via Doncaster on journey planner. Depending on time of day there can be a difference in travel times and prices. East Coast advance tickets often make use of the evening Chinley - Sheffield express trains but the downside is the extra Sheffield to Doncaster journey.
