Hello.

Does anyone know what the use and layout of Alexandra Palace will be once the platform remodelling is complete? It looks like the new platform is temporary, as it's half the usual width and is using a lot of wood!

I envisaged the freight/shunting line to be a new up slow line, but there doesn't seem to be enough permanence in the new platform.

FCC are being a bit rubbish in explaining what's happening, as are NR.

Any ideas?

Best I could find is attached JPG. Orginail PDF found VIA Google using search tearm 'cp4 alexandra palace upgrades' result about Number 7, therefore not sure how reliable it is

(Sorry about spelling I am dyslexic)

The wooden platform is there to be used from December and the current platform will be closed. Whilst we stop trains at the new wooden platform they will halve the width of the current platform (hence the railings on the up fast). Once that's complete they will rip down the wooden platform so the new platform will be half as deep as it is now. So will existing platform and they will fit 2 lines between them both.

Hope that makes sense-very hard to explain on here!

Pity I would have thought an island platform with existing slow and new slow on either side.
Would make more sense for passengers.

Thank you for your post. Please do not feel you have to delete it, it's fine as it is.

On a slight tangent, if it helps you feel more confident about your posts, then the Firefox web browser can have spell checking dictionaries installed into it, which will then let you spellcheck your posts.

Thanks for that - shame it's not higher resolution but I couldn't find a better version!

That makes perfect sense now that there are two yellow lines painted onto the existing platform 1. I thought though that they were going to convert the existing up goods line, as per the NR document (link) but obviously not!

Yes, they are converting the up goods line. The work to narrow the existing island platform, as I understand it, is in preparation for the slewing of the existing up slow to the west of it's current alignment. The line coming off the Hertford loop would then be put alongside it, in the footprint of the slewed line's alignment, so that in operational use, a train coming from the Bowes Park direction could still proceed into Alexandra Palace station even when an ex-WGC train is already in the (narrowed) existing platform. This is in essence the whole point of the works - to completely segregate the trains coming off the Hertford and WGC branches.

After the work is completed, if you were to look down from above at the up side of Alexandra Palace, from west to east you would have a layout thus:

UP fast | railings on platform edge | platform | UP SLOW 1 | UP SLOW 2 | platform

Isn't that going to frustrate passengers wanting to go to Moorgate, who now have to be on the right platform to get the next service (either an ex-WGC slow or an ex-Hertford service)?

It's a shame it couldn't be up slow 1 (wider platform) up slow 2. I guess there wasn't the room - and hope FCC will have a sign to show the next train from the bridge.

I believe the master plan is to do with Thameslink-there will be crossovers north of the station from both lines to each other. As far as I know the moorgate services will eventually all be on the outer line (up slow 2) mainly from Hertford but also crossing from WGC. The current platform will be for the Thameslink stoppers-continuing through to south London.

I notice trains calling at Ally Pally are now using the new platform and the old platform is closed for improvement (looks like they were building the foundations for a lift shaft and resurfacing the whole platform).

And also that Peterborough peak trains stopping and Finsbury Park and Stevenage are now 12-car with the finishing of the platform extensions.

Finsbury Park is getting a station number update on he 19th of May. The reinstated platform one is now platforms one and two, so platform one is now three up to six which is now eight. Under this arrangement though platforms 2 and 3 will both serve one of the up lines while 6 and 7 will both serve one of the down lines.

The track laying machine started work yesterday on the Hitchin flyover - it is due to work for 3 days weather permitting.

This blog post reports that the track was laid on the viaduct yesterday.

http://hitchingradeseparation.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/track-laid-on-viaduct.html

I could see the machine in the distance on the viaduct when travelling off the Cambridge branch this morning.

As of Monday the 13th of May, track is down wherever it is visible from the line. Masts and wires are up, but not tensioned yet (they seem to be 'bowing' towards the centre of the flyover).

There was work being done on the overheads at the Letchworth end when I passed this evening.
I understand it is planned for the flyover to be in use from 24 June.
