My preferred ticket booking site www.takethetrain.co.uk isn't working and has been down for a few days - not a good scenario when you make your living from your website.
Is anyone aware of this being the end of TtT ?

It looks like I'll have to use Plan B, Southwest Trains - and stay away from the First Group/Trainline/RSH style sites.

What's wrong with RSH?

I don't like the format and how the information is presented to me. I find TtT and SWTrains to be much more Scoobyfriendly - also, TtT will often present me cheaper options, but more indirect routes at the same time.

From my previous bookings, I've also found TtT & the SWTrains style websites to be cheaper than the First Group style websites (I know that this should be the case and that all should be equal, byr TtT & SWTrains seem to be more equal than others, for me, from time to time :D )

TtT is working fine for me using Google Chrome, although I prefer the WebTIS interface used by Southern and others.

Me too - still use the old-style RSH "mixing deck" (or LM, Southern etc..). It's much easier to get it to give prices for more indirect routes.

In August, I'm taking a trip from Grange Over Sands to Cardiff.
This is how the 4 different websites returned the identical fare search
Southern £99.50 (incl ticking all permitted routes)
RSH £99.50 (eventually reduced to £28 after I have inputted several 'via' stations through trial and error)
Southwestern Trains £99.50, but reduced to £28.00 with 3 clicks of the mouse
TakeTheTrain £28.00 from first search.

TtT is an excellant search engine and from my usage/experience, knocks spots off the other sites.

Takethetrain used to sell my favourite ticket for getting to Manchester with reservations, but it no longer complies with the Routeing Guide PDFs for that flow, so I cannot get reservations, so no point in me using it now.

A benefit of using Takethetrain:

It offers alternative itineraries, with extended interchange times where appropriate. This means you can choose an itinerary that suits you, for example say you need to take 3 trains. There's an hourly service at either end. But, in the middle, there's a train every 20 minutes. It may well offer you 3 itineraries, all with the same start/finish time, but with the different middle trains. This can be really useful!

A drawback of using Takethetrain:

Last time I used it, the reservation request page was at the end of the process, on the payment screen. Confirmation of reservation was not available until confirmation of payment! So no way to check if a reservation was available (let alone what seat you got) until the booking process is complete!

True. Thankfully, to date, I've never failed to get the reservation where/when I want it.
Plus, on the occassion where I missed asking for a reservation, they followed up my hopeful email request and managed to come up trumps for me.
Now all that have to do is reintroduce the free MP3 downloads and Mrs Scooby will be happy as well :D

I do like TTT and use it sometimes for the reasons you've given. But mostly RSH due to the clubcard thing, EC for the 11% discount, Southern for the rainyday/cashback, LM because they have sales and keep sending me discount codes.

The other week I wanted to book a round trip ticket from London-Hull-Bridlington-Scarborough-London in August and for a straight search I was quoted £50+ on advances for the date I needed. A bit of fiddling on RSH got it down to £31.40. TTT offered the £31.40 straight away. (Then Hull trains released their advances and it went down to less than £30 but would go via Selby and I'm banking on the Goole route being re-opened!). However, in the end I booked with EC due to the 11% discount on their web fares - so just about £28 in total (and on the way back I get the pleasure of travelling via Leeds as well for a 3 minute time penalty over the direct York-Doncaster route).

No doubt there's someone who knows how to make this trip for a fiver but I'm happy with the price I've paid :D

I thought I'd have a look at takethetrain.co.uk after reading this thread, but (with Firefox) get an 'Untrusted Connection' page. Under 'Technical Details', its says:

www.takethetrain.co.uk uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for the following names:
*.clicktravel.com , clicktravel.com

(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

What do people think?

That there's probably a problem with your computer, and in any case a quick Google search reveals ClickTravel operate takethetrain.co.uk (see this).

Edit: more likely the IP address recently changed, and your internet service providers 'DNS servers' not following the correct specification, which will resolve itself shortly.
