Had the pleasure of travelling on an EMT Class 153 today. Looking into the cab there doesnt appear to be much room ! Is there a height restriction for drivers on these units ?

the cab? You mean the small cab at the end that was not originally intended to be used as a cab? Yes they are tiny!

I have heard that some drivers prefer the small end as it has more legroom. Apparently the desk doesn't go all the way to the floor as it does in the other cab or something.

Small end is definitely the better end to drive from in my opinion when it comes to leg room. The big end has a nice slanted bit coming from the dash down midway towards the DSD.

Someone I know works down on a Cornwall Branch Line, and he hates 153's for driving. However, he prefers them to the 142's+144's!

No height restriction that I'm aware of. I prefer the No.2 end (small) of the 153 because of the extra legroom. No.1 end has the horn/wiper cock under the desk and the panel covering them makes the space a bit tighter for your knees.

It's a strange situation but the small end does indeed seem to have more legroom than the original large cab. That apart, the general ambiance of the small end is a lot more claustrophobic. I'm only 5'6 and i find it cramped. Your face seems unnaturally close to the windscreen, and with the implementation of new equipment, GSMR etc, the cramped effect increases.
The refresh carried out on EMT's 153's addressed some of the legroom issues of the large cab by moving the direction switch to the drivers left side from it's former position front centre, as well as harmonising the positions of various other controls.
All in all they are a lot better than they were, although the boffins are still scratching their heads with the leaky door seals, wiper switches that won't switch off, sticky horns etc.

I'm beginning to wish the passengers enjoyed the same spacious leg-room as the drivers. :)

I'm 6ft and it was very cramped as a passenger. Luckily I had seat to myself so sat an angle ! I would say it was the small cab i looked at, I guess the driver has to fold the seat base down as they sit.

I'm certainly no giant at 5'8 but I find the No.1 end uncomfortable with the panelling coming into contact with my knees.
Having recently worked a 153 from St.Philips Marsh to Wolverton via Birmingham, I had the small end for the entire journey and found relatively comfortable for the duration...its only the space for making a brew, or lack of it, that's an issue for me.

Well I dunnow about leg room, but the occupant of the cab of the 153 I was on earlier was a gentleman with a fuller figure - and judging by the look on his face he would willingly have given up extra leg room in favour of more room in general! I occassionally see fuller figured gentlemen occupying the small cab of a 153 and they never look remotely happy! (That could be nothing to with the size of the cab though!)
