This has almost certainly been asked before, but which two consecutive stations have the most types of different traction travelling between them?

If we say that the trains have to stop at both stations then Banbury to Leamington Spa has to be in the running. Limiting it to passenger trains, on any given day you will get the following movements between both stations:

Class 165
Class 168
Class 172
Class 220
Class 221
Class 67 & Mk3 coaches

It's probably a bit easier if you allow for trains passing through without stopping because you can just pick somewhere like Clapham Junction or Birmingham New Street and go with that, but I'd be interested to know the answer to that too. Over to the forum hive mind!

Edinburgh-Haymarket I get to be HST, 67 & Mk2, 91 & Mk4 and classes 156, 158, 170, 185, 220, 221, 334 and 380. All vary from several an hour to once or twice a day.

Edit - and the occasional 390 too!

I hope I've got the jist of this thread, but Cardiff to Newport is certainly one that I can think of.

The following run between Cardiff and Newport and vice versa:

Class 142: Make occassional appearances on Maesteg to Cheltenham services
Class 143: Same
Class 150: FGW 150/1 and 150/2 on the Taunton services, ATW 150/2 on Maesteg to Cheltenham services.
Class 153: Regularly strengthening both FGW and ATW services
Class 158 (both First Great Western 158/7 and 158/9 and Arriva 158/8)
Class 170 (170/1, 170/3, 170/5 and 170/6)
Class 175 (both 175/0 and 175/1)
Class 220: Both Voyager classes appear on the daily Cardiff diagram.
Class 221: As above
FGW HSTs
Class 67

The occasional HST, though none scheduled at the moment since I believe there is no extra HST on summer saturdays this year.

I doubt there is any 153 scheduled to run through, though I suppose it is not impossible.

When the 180 was running Hazel Grove - Preston then that would match Haymarket - Waverly.

There are also occasional scheduled 170s on South TPE, so 11 traction types in total.

I don't think there are either. Pre-December 08 there was a 156+153 evening working from Hazel Grove but I don't think there are any booked 153 workings now.

However the OP says consecutive stations - that's not the case between Piccadilly and Stockport ;)

Chester to Crewe:

153 (occasionally)
158
175
220

57/pendo drag (sometimes)

Chester to Wrexham, same as above but no 57/pendo

If you include freight Chester - Wrexham also has 47, 56, 57, 60 & 66 (they usually stop at Wrexham for signal clearance if this counts)

Occasionally Voyagers too, when diverted. I think Pendolinos may also have been very occasionally dragged through the area too

That stopped a couple of years back, just like the HSTs no longer doing Manchester-Newquay on Summer Saturdays.

Also 323s are only occasional now that it's just an evening Deansgate-Stoke service and match day services to Old Trafford. The morning Crewe-Oxford Rd service is booked for 2 x 142s.

Are there any 175-booked services between Chester and Crewe? (Is the 0515 from Holyhead booked for a 175 or a 158?)

Similarly, I though the Pendolino drags were long gone - with Virgin getting rid of their 57s.

And as for the 67s - if that's for the WAG Express, then doesn't that go via Wrexham and not via Crewe now?

Yes. One was caught in the live feed of Castlefield for a weekend edition of Granada News when they were based at Quay Street. They also managed to catch a 5 car 175 working on Sundays occasionally.

I've seen 175s running Chester-Crewe but that was a few years ago so may not still be the case.

Definitely, maybe not 'booked' but 175s certainly turn up.

1943 Oxford Road - Wilmslow via Manchester Airport is a 323.

I think there's still a couple of evening Oxford Road - Wilmslow via Manchester Airport services?

EDIT: Lampshade beat me to it. That's the one I was on the other day - does owt else ever use P1 at MCO these days? And it is followed by two later services which I often catch from P13 at Piccadilly.

I've seen 175s running Chester-Crewe but that was a few years ago so may not still be the case.

Saw one at Piccadilly the other day, clearly on diversion, it was a service to Chester calling at Crewe & Chester. Make of that what you will...

Further edit: there are definitely voyagers going through at this moment in time: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P51398/2013/07/16/advanced

I think that the best Yorkshire example is Sheffield Midland to Meadowhall:

  • 142
  • 144
  • 150
  • 153
  • 158
  • 170
  • 185
  • 220 (doesn't stop at Meadowhall)
  • 221 (doesn't stop at Meadowhall)
  • 222 (doesn't stop at Meadowhall)
  • HST (doesn't stop at Meadowhall)

...plus the Purple Route Supertram (if you want to cheat!)

57's no longer drag Pendo's along the North Wales Coast
WAG no longer runs via Crewe IIRC
220's don't even touch Chester (the closest places with them is Crewe on the few XC's that call there)

175's turn up fairly often, usually around the early morning (i.e 04:55) and late evening especially on weekends.

I thought there was a single booked Saturday service for crew knowledge retention purposes.

Correct. http://www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk/Templates/Content.aspx?pageid=402

Again correct. Virgin have 221s only so Chester-London services are never 220s. Also, Birmingham-Scotland via Preston comes under Virgin not XC so if those services are diverted via Chester (which happens on occasions) then they'll also be 221s not 220s.

The Saturday pendo drag stopped last year.
