Having just got an Xperia SP on Orange, I do indeed like this phone, it runs on Android 4.2 & boasts a 4.8 inch screen. Perfect for what I need :)

What phones do you have? Do you prefer old school or new age phones? Android, Windows or Apple?

I no longer rate Apple devices. I don't think the Apple brand carries the rarity it once did. The iPhone is no longer a big thing - they are abundant in the consumer market and the technology has been replicated on a better scale by the likes of Samsung and Android.

The present iPhone is a bit of a let down. I've been plagued by issues with the internet signal - random cut outs are frequent. The whole experience feels fiddly and very overpriced. Beneath the surface the technology has been enhanced but for me this doesn't swing it.

I will be swapping for a Blackberry, or possibly a Samsung device, as soon as I can.

My current phone is the Nexus 4. It's a brilliant phone and basically runs vanilla Android

I'm an Android person because it's always been easy to get under the phone and customise it how you like. That's not to say Android is without it's faults, at the moment I feel app permissions are too excessive although of course that's not the Android OS's fault. The Ubuntu phone looks interesting, not least because iirc all it's software is going to be FOSS

Got rid of my blackberry last month thank god! Got a Samsung galaxy ace plus or whatever now but ideally I'd like an iPhone. Yes they're not as rare but they're still a decent phone

I'm still walking around with a nearly-9-year-old Nokia 6021: the advantage is that it is virtually indestructible, though I would like to upgrade (significantly) to an iPhone at some point.

I abandoned Apple products this year after nearly twenty years of using them. I have found the Samsung Galaxy S3 to be intuitive, solid and hugely flexible.

Got a Nokia 100. It makes calls and sends texts. That's all I need one to do.

I've ditched my iPhone 4 and am currently trying out a LG Nexus 4 and Android for the first time.

Not sure about the phone or the vanilla Android but I definitely won't be getting an iPhone 5. As I understand it their 4g capability will be specific to a particular network unlike most other 4g phones.

Almost certainly going to get a HTC One.

I have a Galaxy SIII which is just about perfect for almost everything I need it for! No major faults with it apart from bad battery life but that's probably because I'm using it too much! I used to have an HTC Desire HD which was much much worse!

Mine, a Samsung E250 is now in a persistent vegetative state after getting a bit damp ie the button's don't work. Looks like I'll have to trudge out in the pouring rain tomorrow to get a new one. Not entirely convinced to get a smartphone yet.

have a galaxy ace, but the quicker I get rid the better. Can't see how it is still selling for over £100 at Argos, it is stuck on gingerbread, often freezes and rings people without being asked. It has also required a new battery.

HTC Desiro City Desire C, running Android 4.0. (It needed a new motherboard recently, and Three offered to upgrade to Android 4.3, but I told them not to as it would mean I'd lose Adobe Flash, which I like having.)

Samsung Galaxy S4, great phone, although not as good as all the hype.

I have an LG Viewty Lite. I also got a Samgung Galaxy Y for free for being a Optimus Kanguru Internet costumer for 3 years.

I'm thinking about purchasing or a Windows Phone 8 or the Microsoft Surface.
The Surface would be a good laptop substitute since it's lighter and has everything I need to work in college: access to the Internet, Skydrive integrated and Office programs. It also shares the same Apps that Windows 8 uses, so I can use them whenever I am and sync everything with my desktop, from notes to my car consumptions. I'm not sure about the WP8, since I'm not much of a phone user, a simple mobile phone would do well paired with the Surface.

Do you not find that the Android keypad is a pain in the arse ?

Specifically, if you're trying to post something on the internet, there's no way to place the cursor, which makes it nigh on impossible to write anything properly.

An Alcatel OT-903 which is a low end smartphone, it's decent enough for what I do with it, although the battery life is an issue (although having said that, that seems to be a common complaint with smartphones).

That sounds good - are there any instructions anywhere to get onto it ?

If your phone's an HTC, it's in Settings > Language and keyboard > HTC Sense input > Trace keyboard. Other manufacturers will be something similar, if they have such a function. (If your phone doesn't have this option, there's an app called Swype you can install that works the same.)

You can flash the HTC IME_mod to get the HTC keyboard although I don't know if it'll work on a non-HTC phone. If you mean swiping your finger as though you were spelling it then that's something the stock android keyboard supports as of Jelly Bean

Thanks Eagle and SS4 I'll have a go :D

Regards swiping my finger as though I were spelling it, I'm ok at ignoring the predictive text. It's the difficulty in placing the cursor thats the problem for me (unless you've sorted that in the above posts)!

Ah apologies, I though you meant the actual typing. Won't really work for that, I just trial and error it then give up and use the computer

Mine is a Sony Ericsson K770i on the Vodafone network but the smartphone features aren't enabled*; I only use it for SMS texting and the occasional one way call to say what time I'll be home.

*Contract was too expensive so it's on PAYG... Not even sure if I could get pictures out of it on PAYG - never tried...

No probs. You'd have thought the people designing the system would have played with it enough to sort it out beforehand !

I'm currently using an iPhone 5 - they've always been great phones for me, but I just can't get on with the 5. It has appalling battery life, and seems to crash out if ask to do anything remotely difficult - unlike my previous iPhone 4. Another annoyance is the re-designed charger, which means I now have to have two separate leads for my iPad and iPhone, where as I only previously had to carry one.

Considering a Samsung next time, but tied into this one for two years now!

Geordie back from exile.
I have two phones for a variety of reasons, both Samsung. I got a Galaxy S Advance (Android 2.3) first then a while later got a Galaxy S2 (Android 4.1). The first S Advance failed after only 6 months and had to get the motherboard replaced under warranty which was pretty straightforward. Lost all the stuff but I had it all backed up anyway.

I really can't imagine life without a smartphone now. Recently on a trip to the UK I used both Viber and Tango for free international calls which saves a lot of £££s. I must admit I do like the Samsung and the whole App world and I wouldn't touch Apple with an extremely large bargepole. I'm the odd one out in my circle of friends as they all have iPhones but I cannot see the attraction. Maybe it is just me but the iPhone just doesn't seem as intuitive to use. My friends probably say the same about the Android stuff though.... :)

iPhone 5 for me, perfect size fits easily in a pocket, is nice and slim and works seamlessly with my iPad.

And I don't really need a phone the size of my head.
