The London Midland website allows you to buy a ticket to "London All-Zones Travelcard". What does this actually mean?

i.e. does it give you a ticket to Euston plus an all zones travelcard? Or does it just allow you to travel to a station in the travelcard area?

Finally where is this ticket valid: just national rail, or London Underground, Overground, buses maybe? DLR?

It's one ticket, it allows you to travel into and return from London, plus you can make as many trips as you like within TfL zones on Train, Tram, Tube, DLR & Bus

Thank you. Can I just slide it through the tube barriers like a tube ticket? (I don't want to hold up the queues).

Is it limited to zones 1-6 or is it really "All Zones" icluding 7,8,9 and whetever other weird zones have recently been created?

Yes, it will operate the tube barriers. They look like this (see attachement)

Note also that even if the ticket has a restriction like LDN MIDLAND ONLY printed on it, this restriction only applies on the journey to and from London. Once in the zones you can use any operators' services on TfL Bus, Tube, DLR and National Rail (except Heathrow Connect between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow, Heathrow Express and HS1)

I am guessing that it will issue a zones 1-6 Can you even get truly all zones on an outboundary Travelcard?

You can for Seasons; I don't know about Day Travelcards. They are issued as "between <origin> and London Z1-6 Route: AAA Z7-9", or something along those lines.

You can if the origin is within Zones 7-9, or Watford Junction (or one of the stations recently brought into the zones on the GEML although I don't think TISs have been set up properly to show the additional validity).

Not sure I'd count that as outboundary though...

I agree with the above.

I was behind a tourist at London Bridge tube station the other week who was getting quite annoyed that the yellow Oyster Card reader on the barrier wasn't recognising his paper travelcard...

And to emphasise the point made early on - you only get one return journey between the origin station and the boundary of zone 6 - you can't (for example) go home at tea time, then go back in to London later (you obviously can do this with a one day travelcard if you live inside the zones) - a lot of people travelling from stations just outside London get caught out by this.

In theory, I think the way round this would be to buy a separate "home station to boundary zone 6" return ticket for your second journey - and ensure that the barriers don't eat your ticket when you get back to your origin station on the first journey.

As the origin station has not been stated, we can't answer that directly. As bb21 says, if the origin is Watford Jn or is within Zones 7-9 then yes it will be additionally valid in Zones 7-9.

Wonder if anyone's needed to get to (e.g.)Amersham and visit other places in London and tried it with an "All zone" ticket?

Yes, a while back before I had the faintest idea of fares and ticket types. I wanted to do a bash with a member from here around London which involved Amersham. I asked for an "All zones" TCD from Sloane Square ticket office. I was given the ticket and without looking at it and used it then when trying to exit from Amersham it worked, but not coming back in. I showed the geezer behind the counter and he told me its not valid but said I could go through anyway  (I don't know how he opened the gate from the TO). Upon looking at it a few months later, it appeared I had been sold a 1-6.

By industry definition, Travelcards that are wholly valid within Zones 1-6 are inboundary. Everything else is outboundary. Another reason why Zones 7, 8 and 9 are not really zones in the traditional sense.

Hope that settles it. ;)

(The definition was taken from The Manual when I wrote the Fares & Ticketing Guide.)

As of NFM16 (which came into force on 8th September), GA have adjusted the fares for Theobalds Grove, Waltham Cross and Cheshunt - London Zones 1-6 to bring them into line with the other Zone 7-9 stations. They're still routed "Any Permitted" rather than "AAA LDN ZONE 7-9" however.
